Interesting - are you certain about Bury St Edmunds?

I ask because there is a Charles Neale age 4 in 1851, living with his parents John, 45 and Mary, 43 in Foulsham in Norfolk.

Big family: George 17, Willliam 12, Sarah 10, Henry 8, Betsey 6, Charles, and then Joseph age 2.

John is an Ag. Labourer. born in Guestwick, Norfolk

If you search for Charles Neal without an 'e' nothing comes up in East Anglia.

Do you have any more background on the family?

Hi maggie, the info l have on Charles is scant, l know he was born in 1845 in BstE on the 1881 census he is a visitor in BstE, listed as Ag lab, gives place of birth as BstE?

Thanks for your help Maggie.

Robert,
I've found the 1881 entry - two points, the first is that Charles is listed as 32, with an assume birth date of 1849, not 45 or 47.     The other is that you are quite right it certainly does list 'B.St Ed' as his birthplace but if you look at the entry the whole family is listed as ditto all the way down, including Charles. who is the visitor at the end.

I'm not say for one moment that's wrong, just that it's worth considering that Charles, as a visiting Ag labourer, may not have been there when the Enumerator arrived and his place of birth just got 'ditto' along with the rest of the family, because the person who gave the information didn't know any different.

Happy to have another look if you like?
