Can I wake him up, Mum?
|
I'm wondering if there is anyone likely to be visiting the Birmingham Archives at some stage who would have time to do a lookup for me.
Today I received a birth certificate for George Thomas Steeles, born 28th October 19 10 at the City Asylum, Lodge Road, Birmingham, mother Emily Jane Steeles, (late Webb, formerly Sanders) and father William Steeles of 9 Villa St, Birmingham. Little George also died in 1910.
His father is living alone at the same address (9 Villa St) in 1911. There is no sign of Emily Jane Steeles when a normal search is done, and no sign of her death. An advanced search though reveals an EJS married and aged 40 as a patient at the City Asylum.
I found the following website that says that patient records for this period can be accessed at the Birmingham Archives...... http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=206&page=2
I'd dearly like to know if there is more information to add to this sad story. The first child of William and Emily is found living in another household in Villa St, Birmingham in 1911 as an adopted child.
If someone is visiting the Birmingham Archives, and can spare the time, it would be very much appreciated.

You would need really to know when she was admitted - then also know if the records will be open for public view (we are only in 2009 and therefore possibly the records will still not be open for public access)
Why not write to b/ham and check this first and then seek there advice on gaining further information

I would expect Emily was admitted in 1910 before her second child was born. She had her first early in 1909.
I shall try emailing them and see if they can tell me about the records being available.
Thanks, Lemontree.
