Hampshire newspapers in 1840s to locate death by drowning
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 09:14 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for death by drowning on 22 September 1840 of John Sainsbury aged 1 Year 11 months in Kimpton, Hampshire. There was a coroners' inquest and I was wondering if it was reported in the local newspapers - but which would they be and where could I look at them?

Thanks.

I had a look in Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle, for that period, there were 2 inquests reported, but not at Kimpton or involving anyone called Sainsbury.

Thanks for looking Tom.   Smiley

I was thinking a most likely report would have been in an Andover newpaper if there was one then. I think I will need to go to the archives at Colindale or possible Winchester.

I have actually found the inquest reported in the newspaper you mentioned! He died drowned in a well. The search engine for the 19th Century newspapers is faulty. I looked at the newspaper closest to the date, read through it and found it. Thanks for giving me the idea!

What date was the inquest? I have tried searching myself and I can't find it?

It was in the newspaper dated 28 september 1840, under the winchester section. A mr Todd did the inquest. The outcome was accidental death. The search on the newspapers I now realise is rubbish. I have searched them before and assumed there was nothing. I now want to have a look at more local newspapers at colindale to find even more detail.
