Thank you all! Arnold Warren, Cricketer
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 10:09 UTC (UK) »

Thank you all so so much for your help with this article, it is now complete and you can see it at http://www.codnor.info/arnold_warren.php I have credited rootschat.com for your contribution.

Can anyone help me with my research on Arnold Warren the cricketer who came from my village Codnor in Derbyshire. Born 2nd April 1875 Died 3rd September 1951.
I have plenty of information on his cricketing career with Derbyshire CC between 1897 and 1920 but no photographs. He also played in the 3rd Test match between England v Australia in 1902
However I believe he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery in WW1 and I would appretiate any information on his army career.
Any information would be most welcome as I am trying to write an article about him for the Codnor local History website.
If I can help anyone with their questions on Codnor I will try my best.
Regards Stuart

Hello and welcome

Have you found him in the censuses already(1881,1891,1901,1911) or did you want someone to look for you?

Sorry, no help with the military, but here's 1901 census.
I found it interesting - bricklayer as the day job! Irish mother, father from Leics, so not a Codnor family.
And his son bn Middlesex - were they down there for the cricket I wonder when he arrived!

1901
RG13 3144 63 18
Wright Street Codnor
John 70 bricklayer bn Leicestershire
Mary 68 bn Ireland
Albert 28 unm bricklayer bn Codnor
Arnold 24 Mar bricklayer bn Codnor
Lydia 24 dtr in law bn Codnor
John A 9mths grandson bn Middlesex
Rose Martin 29 unm neice servant bn Ireland

His Military record seems to be on Ancestry - it looks like he fractured his neck, spine and right shoulder blade and later had restricted movement and pain.
Have you got a subscription for Ancestry? I dont know if you can view these docs on payasyougo or not, or at local librairies. Someone will advise.

Hi

His father owned a building business, he built many of the houses in Codnor including his own on Wright Street called Warren House. His severn sons helped him with the bricklaying in fact Arnolds brother Charles built the house that I live in on Jessop Street, The old lead flashing from the chimney stack is engraved C H Warren 1881

I dont have an account with Ancestry at the moment, its something Ive got to do in the very near future so I am having to rely on the good nature of people like yourself to find out info for me.

Hi Stuart,

You can search WW1 Records via the National archives site:-

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm

When page opens, put mouse over "Search the Archives"  box on top line, on drop down list click on
"Documents on Line"
When next page opens, in the "Quick Search Box" enter 60381 which is Arnold's regimental number,
select date 1900-1949 from drop down box and click search.

You are then presented with results for 21 documents/records, you will find Arnold Warren on the 2nd page,
3rd entry from bottom.
click on "See details", to purchase a copy of this medical record card is £2, you can do this by following instructions on site using a credit or debit card, the items arrives within seconds via a connection sent to your e-mail address.

Hi Stuart
Greetings from nearby Jacksdale
We have a book called Backward Glances - an album of early cricket photos - but Albert Warren does not appear in there.
Perhaps try contacting:  The MCC who have an archive
or Derbys. CC
Ripley Library have a newspaper archive of the Ripley and Heanor on fiche?
Also would he should appear in Wisden's Cricketing Almanack.

regards Mog
