PARR - 1700's and later
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 12:42 UTC (UK) »

Hello All,

I'm trying to find out more about the Parr's of Ixworth, I've birth dates and things like that but I suppose what I'd really like if possible is local information, they seem to have had a Farm in Ixworth and something to do with a Mill as well on the High Street, I've been able to find out from Whites that it wasn't the Dairy Farm but not sure which it might have been. Also, any local information as to why the majority of the family died in the 1790's through 1820's? Was there a disease that may have swept through?
Any information what so ever would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks,

Sara

Unfortunately Ixworth has changed a lot in recent years with the by-pass and the new housing estates.  Sad

You can see the church at Simon's web site
www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/ixworth.htm

There are some old photos at
http://www.francisfrith.com/ixworth/
one shows the High Street, which has benefitted from the traffic being moved elsewhere.

Ixworth and Ixworth Thorpe have a web site hosted by Suffolk County Council at OneSuffolk
http://www.onesuffolk.co.uk/IxworthPC/

The mill is still there, and in 1844 Charles Parr is listed as being 'Farmer, Stack-ings' - not sure if that is the name of the farm - you could probably find out via www.old-maps.co.uk

There were only nine Parrs buried in Ixworth 1790-1829, and only one year when there was more than one (1800, mother and infant son). So hardly an epidemic. Their ages were 14, 80, infant, 23, 46, 66, 73, 81, 2.

It looks more a case of natural wastage

Hmm, okay, well I've gone back to try and find out what I "know". I know that Charles Parr, definitely mine, was born 1855 Ixworth to Charles Parr and Charlotte Ann Coe. Have the birth certificate, the father is listed as Miller hence why I was rather confident that the 1851 census which shows Charles Senior as farmer and junior as miller was mine. Can't find marriage of Charles and Charlotte though.
Nor can I find any birth information for Charles Junior, census says born 1823 Ixworth but can't find anything proving his birth or giving his mother.
I know that Charles Senior did marry Susan and after she died married a Rebecca, someone's even sent me the tomb stone which shows all three of them!

Going to try and tidy things up and see if I can't find some more solid connections.

Many thanks!

I have now checked my 1855 White's and the old original setting out shows better than the 1844 re-print (I do use books not CDs).

Definitely down as Farmers then the farms listed and under Stack-Ings there are four names and the second one is Charles Parr.

Dairy Farm is still on our modern map with the water mill nearby.

In 1855 John Potter and Son (Philip) are listed as the Millers at The Mill and John Potter is also listed under Stack-Ings.

Someone with local knowledge might be able to tell if Stack-Ings is a hamlet? or a local area, rather than one farm.

PS  Wink

Don't forget that Ixworth is on the Suffolk parish Look Ups Exchange which you will find at www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk
