Woodside/Bishop Toxteth Liverpool
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 13:10 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to obtain information on my G Grandmother:

Gladys Maude Bishop (Nee Woodside)
DOB: 1890
Toxteth Liverpool

She was married to William George Bishop He died in 1910

By 1911 she was living with her parents:
Robert Woodside Martha Woodside (Nee McCarty)
66 Hampton Street Toxteth

She had several brothers.

Any information on Gladys would be great.

Gladys daughter Martha Elizabeth  Bishop is also at that address with the Woodside family.
Martha Elizabeth   Bishop born Sept 1/4 1906 Liverpool  8b 117
Note* when i looked at the 1911 directory, numbers 52 to 68 seem to be an orphanage/Liverpool charity relief mission child rescue?
No  Woodside or Bishop family shown at that address then?

Hi, Gladys' birth/marriage are on freebmd as is her daughter's marriage to Edwin Turner in 1929 followed by four possible children: Edwin 1930, Brian 1932, Robert 1934, and George 1936.  So info will be available from the certificates.

In the 1881 census, her parents have 2 daughters, Sarah and Margaret, and one son, Robert.

Are you wanting to work backwards or forwards on this one ? R.   Grin

Migky,

Thank you for input.

Over night I have been through my documents:

On the 1911 census Martha Bishop I took as Gladys's Niece.
It is interesting to know that 52 - 68 were orphanges/charity relief mission and child rescue.

And yet on the 1911 census the house is 66 Hampton St.

Royd,

It gets more and more interesting.

I have traced Gladys's Woodside family back from Liverpool, to Hagley Worcs and then to Scotland Gatehouse of fleet.

It is the Liverpool area I am interested in.
My Gran Rachel Dorothy Hearn (Nee Bishop) DOB: 28 April 1912 was born in Smithdown hospital.
No father is on the birth cert, we think we know who the father was.
Gladys gave my Gran away???
Gladys was married to William George Bishop but he died in 1910
In 1908 they had a child who was born in 1908 and died in 1908, the childs name was Gladys.
She had another child Harry Bishop Born Dec Qtr 1920.
She married Richard H Taylor in Liverpool Jul-Sep 1926 8b 642.

On the 1911 census she is living with her parents.

I very much interested in any information around this period.

If you need more clarification please let me know.

Do I have this right then?

Gladys married William Bishop and they had: Martha b1906
                                                                        Gladys b1908-d1908
Then William died in 1910

Gladys then had Rachel b1912 (unknown father)who was then given away.
                           Harry  b 1920 (unknown father?)

Gladys then married Richard Taylor in 1926.

Is the unknown father likely to be the father of both Rachel and Harry do you think?

It looks like she returned to live with her parents after the death of her husband.  If the census is showing an orphanage, I wonder if her parents were involved in the running of it?

What made you think that Martha was Gladys' niece?

Sorry about all the questions, just trying to set the scene in my mind!  What more are you hoping to find?

Royd,

I suppose I was trying to find if anyone on roots chat, may have had a connection to Gladys Bishop (Nee Woodside) and may have had some personal information about her.

So that I could fill in the blanks for the rest of my family and cousins.

It was worth a shot.

Thank you for all of the information gathered.  I do appreciate what has been forwarded to me.

Hi Keith, it is worth keeping hold of this web site if you are looking for any burials around Toxteth.
I see the names Bishop/Woodside & McCarty are on there but i have not looked to match any with yours.

Smithdown hospital was the infirmary attached to the poorhouse/institution.  It often appears as "126 Smithdown road" (or similar) on certificates because of the stigma attached to those places.

Their records are held at Liverpool main record office (known locally as the Picton library)

Her parent's lived in Hampton Street a long time (you have them in 1891 I presume?). If her siblings continued to live in the area, chances are the boys joined up in WWI. Have you looked thorugh the military records for their names?  Also, that area was particularly damaged during wwII so chances are they moved elsewhere.

Her father was a groom. Have you seen Edwin Woodside living in the same area, also from Worcester (Clent, near Hagley), who was also a groom?

I have had a look on Genes but couldn't find Martha.  There are, however, several people with Woodside's from Toxteth in their trees.  If you need further info, just let me know.  Regards. R.

Robert Henry is definitly there, in the pension records. But not in WWI.
Seems he was in military from 1894 to 1907.
Along with his parent's, it names a William and Sarah Jane as his siblings.

Charles is there too. Also prior to WWI. Says his wife is Sarah Howard, if that helps.

Haven't looked at the others.
