Holland family became Gifford (Phillipson from Wigan)

Just because this caused me no end of trouble, I thought |I'd post this info in case it's of use to anyone else ! I will also post this on London & Sussex boards.

Henry Holland b c 1820 Ninfield Sussex;
his wife Alice (nee Phillipson) b c 1820 Wigan Lancs,
their daughters Alice b c 1849;
Sarah b c 1852;
Anne b c 1854, all Herstmonceux and their son
Henry Henderson Holland b c 1856 either Herstmonceux or Hellingley (depends on census !).

All members of this family were listed with the surname Gifford from 1871 census onwards (when they were living in Lewisham, London).

Daughter Anne's name at marriage was still Holland - she was also known as Eliza (just to confuse matters - birth reg as Eliza Anne Frderica !)

Do you know when did Henry died?What are the details of the family on the 1871 census please if you have them?

Hi Dotty,

Don't have a date for the death of Henry senior, but it would be between 1871 & 1881
Census:
RG10 766
19 Thurston Rd Lewisham
Henry Gifford Head 50 Clerk Sussex Ninfield
Alice Gifford Wife 61 Lancashire Wigan
Alice A?H? Gifford Daur 21 Unm no occ Sussex Herstmonceux
Sarah Gifford Daur 18 Unm Teacher b ditto
Annie Gifford Daur 16 Unm ditto b ditto
Mary Latchford? Lodger 14 ditto Surrey Brixton

I believe daughter Alice's middle name was Landsell or similar.
The son, Henry Henderson Holland/Gifford, was at Eastbourne College age 13

Since the original post I have found reference in the London Gazette to the bankruptcy proceedings against Henry Holland from Hastings in Sussex, but I haven't gone further yet to check it out ! This would certainly explain the change of name & location !!
