WW1 soldiers' care home in Cardiff area?
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 14:30 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone tell me if there was a care home or hospital in the Cardiff area for WW1 soldiers who suffered injuries/shellshock?
I believe my great uncle spent his life there and died in 1970.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi
I'm not sure if I am right but Whitchurch Hospital in Whitchurch Cardiff was/is a mental Hospital. It is possible that he was there. Have you got his death certificate that would give where he died.
If you don't have his certificate and want it give me his name and I will look for the death reg info. Also are you sure he died in 1970?

Hi cardiff.
Thanks for your speedy response.

The GRO for Dec Quarter, 1970 gives the correct birth date so it looks very likely to be the right entry - I'm looking forward to seeing the death cert.
When it arrives I will know what sort of patients the Hospital cared for if it is Whitchurch.

My great uncle, William MORGAN's family moved from North Wales to Rotherham, Yorkshire via Tyldesley, Lancashire and we don't know why he was cared for in South Wales. My great aunts used to travel from Rotherham to visit him and they didn't say very much about him.
My cousin very wisely said today "Oh, how I wish I had known I was going to do the family history!!!!!"

Thanks again

I wrote a lengthy piece on Service Patients here....

It may be of help, as will the book I mentioned, "Forgotten Lunatics Of The Great War"

There was also a hospital in Chepstow that housed victims of shellshock from the first world war and I believe the last patient died around 1980, as Chepstow is not that far from Cardiff I thought I would mention it.

Very Best Wishes Bethan

Most of the old county asylums housed Service Patients...they were normally grouped together on wards...See my link above to the surprising amount there were

Sincere thanks, scrimnet for this.
It brings out the reality of war and how The Fallen did not just include the soldiers who physically died.

I now have Uncle Will's death certificate and he died in Rookwood Hospital.
A cousin has also been in touch and she remembers going to Llandaff to visit him there. She mentioned him having shrapnel lodged in his back so he may not have been hospitalised for the Shellshock but for physical injury.
Regards,
Shirley

Hi
That makes sense Rookwood is a spinal injury unit and is still open.
