Wortley by Penistone
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 14:41 UTC (UK) »

This chapel (Wortley by Penistone) is mentioned on the IGI but I don't know where it was.  I can't seem to find anything out about it in my books or on, say, Genuki.  Was it St. Leonard's church at Wortley, or somewhere else?

Hello Claire,

Yes, I would say so.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Tankersley/index.html

That Wortley is near Penistone, the other Wortley is nearer to Leeds

To confuse the issue:
If you search for "Wortley Chapel" you will find one mention of 'A congregation of Methodists worshipping at Wortley Chapel in Yorkshire' but it doesn't specify which Wortley.  The other 'hits' seem to relate to the parish church of St Laurence, Wortley near Penistone.

This chapel (Wortley by Penistone) is mentioned on the IGI

If you go to the first link I gave, scroll down and click on St. Leonard's Church, Wortley - whereabouts of parish records are given, and that is the one covered by the IGI as mentioned above.

I'm still confused I'm afraid (doesn't take much).  The entries from the IGI for Wortley by Penistone are earlier than the IGI coverage for Wortley church (St. Leonards).  These date to the 1780s and 90s, whereas the IGI coverage for St. Leonards is 1813-1837.  Also, Wortley was in the parish of Tankersley, whereas Penistone was a parish in its own right.

Thanks for that - it's a good job someone knows what they are doing!!!
It seems to me as if it just says 'Wortley by Penistone' to distinguish it from the other Wortley in Leeds.  So what was meant to avoid confusion actually adds to it (in my humble opinion).

Let's not go too far, Claire!  Smiley

It would be good if someone has access to the parish registers for you - the IGI can't be totally relied on and it's best to check any entries with the actual registers if possible.  If you have a specific baptism or marriage to check, and you'd care to post the full details of the IGI entry you're interested in, hopefully someone may be able to do that for you.

Kind regards
Barbara

Im not sure if they will be held in Barnsley archives or Sheffield. If they are in Barnsley I will do a look up for you  when I next get to the archives, if you post the details.
This won't be for about 4-6 weeks though.

Thanks for the offers.  I am not sure the entries at Wortley by Penistone are related to my family - I was just curious.  I noted them down because my family used Penistone church, and there might have been, say, two John Crossleys having children at the same time and I wondered whether they were the same person.  I am planning a trip to Sheffield archives soon, and I have looked at a fiche of Penistone baptisms there, so I will concentrate on the Penistone ones first.  But I will let you know if I need a hand when I have done a bit more background research, thanks.

Wortley by Penistone records should be in Barnsley archives, but there is more than a possibility that they are in the former West Riding archives at Wakefield.

When I visited about three years ago Sheffield archives did have fiche of Wortley BTs.
At that time Barnsley archives did not have PRs or BTs for Wortley St Leonard, so I would suggest that you contact them before visiting, although it is possible that Wortley was included under Tankersley and not indexed separately.
