William Manger - Sculcoates
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 16:36 UTC (UK) »

Unable to locate William Manger born 1821 in Yorkshire who married Elizabeth Gibson in 1847.  I have located him in 1871 just before he died, but he is missing on the 1851 and 1861 census.
Any help appreciated

Whereabouts in Yorkshire - full birthplace needed for census searches

Can we also have full details for Elizabeth plus any children born prior to the census entries you are seeking (ie) FULL 1871 details

Hi

William was born in Hull, Elizabeth in County Durham in 1824.  They had 8 children in all starting with:
William (1850)
Anne (1852)
Robert (1854)
Caroline (1856)
Mary Jane (1860)
William (1864)
Joseph (1866)
Ethel (1868)
In 1851 they lived in Reform Street, Sculcoates and 1871 in Mason Street.

In 1851 they are indexed as Mager but William snr is not in household.  Living at 18 Reform St

If you look at his occupation on the 1871 census - he was a master mariner - in cases with that occupation you need to search using other family members as your criteria

In 1861 they are correctly shown as Manger but again - hubby not in household so I found them using daughter Caroline as the search criteria

Thanks Carole and thank you for deciphering William's occupation, I could not get the Mariner part, so great help.  I suppose from this one has to assume he was at sea during the census night.  Do you know how I might find out?

If he was in the merchant navy - which is highly likely from his occupation description - then he could have been in another country on census night

Merchant seaman at sea were not on censuses.  If they were moored in British waters on census night then they were included

Thanks Carole for your help, this might be a dead end if he was indeed aboard ship

Many thanks for this. I went onto Family search and found the entry and Sarah was his 2nd wife, her maiden name was Lowther which would match the son's middle name.
