Griffins in Sligo
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 16:44 UTC (UK) »

Hi - I'm trying to find out where my great grandfather - James Griffin - came from.

His children believed that he came from Sligo and that he was born there between 1865 and 1875. On the census return for Liverpool in 1911 he gives his place of birth as Warrington, Lancashire. I can't find him in Warington and was just wandering if he was indeed born in Sligo. Is Griffin a Sligo surname?

Hello,

do you have him in the earlier censuses.

1881 has:
James b 1871- father Edward
James b 1873 - father James

1891
James b 1871 - is a boarder

1901
James b 1873 married to Annie

are any of these your James?

Both these are in Free BMD

Thanks for the reply - I did know about these James Griffins in Warrington but I have very little as yet to connect any of them to my James Griffin.

The problem is I have conflicting information about my James Griffin such as he was born in 1865 or 1873 in Warrington or Sligo. I'm just at the beginning of the process of ruling things out.

Hello again,

apologies if you have already gone down these lines:

where do you first have him- other than 1911 in Liverpool?

who is his father on his marriage certificate?

what is his occupation?

Those James already named had parents from Ireland, one from Mayo (next county to Sligo).

Nothing seems to be showing in births for Sligo on http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

My James Griffin was born between 1865 and 1873. He married in 1918 and his father is listed as James Griffin snr a labourer. My james's occupation was a flower merchant/gardener. His first child was born in 1901 - before he married the mother - and this is the first occasion that he appears in print.

I have found him on the 1911 census with his "wife" and their children and he is listed as a gardener. The James Griffins in the 1901 census do not state any occupations which come close to the one he lists on the 1911 census or indeed any of his childrens' birth certificates.

My gran said he was born in Ireland - her brother told me Sligo. Both agreed that he came over form Ireland and wnet to work in Sheffied, staying with an uncle. Can't find any evidence to support this!

Thank you for looking - much appreciated!

Hello again,
well - yes it looks like a puzzle  Roll Eyes

I can only think of things which you will have checked:
if his child was born in 1901 then he probably wouldn't be in 1901 Irish census-given the time scales.

If he married 1918- possibly he was married before:-\

If he married Catherine Skillicorn  Huh(just saw that in 1918)  and she is the one in Bootle in 1901- there is a James Griffin with a Mary in Bootle also. (both born Ireland).

Other than that - he could easily have changed his occupation - as you would know- the only puzzle in a way is why Warrington?

have looked for Griffins in Sheffield but of course the uncle could be on another side of the family  Wink

I can only say- good luck and sorry I couldn't help

Thanks for the time you spent on this - much appreciated. Perhaps the 1921 UK census might provide further information - only about 13 years to wait!!
