St Joseph's House, Newcastle
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 16:54 UTC (UK) »

Would someone please let me know what St Joseph's House was in the late 1800s and early 1900s in the Newcastle area? I think it was in George's Road or St. George's Road.

Suspect it belonged to The Little Sisters of The Poor

Thank you, Carole. It may have moved from George's Road to Westmoreland Road. Someone may be able to confirm that.

Hi

There is a telephone number for the current place on one of those links - somebody may be able to confirm that for you

I rang the place, and I was told it had been there since 1868. That must mean that St. Joseph's House was a different building.

Where did you get the address from?  If it was a census record what was the name of the person there and which census was it

If it was from a birth cert - what year was it

It was in George Road at the Westmorland Road end. George Road ran from Scotswood Road to Westmorland Road. It was the Little Sisters of the Poor, Home for the Aged, St. Joseph's House, now called St. Joseph's Home.

If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and put the post code NE447QA in search it will centre the map on the location. You will see that the lodge is actually on George Road, although the building is parallel to Westmorland Road.

It is on the 1901 census. The name was Henry Halsey, aged 64, an inmate at St Joseph's House, George Road, Newcastle. I noticed a mistake in his place of birth which is down as Codicote, Herefordshire, which I am certain is in Hertfordshire. I noticed his wife was down as married but living at nearby Elswick without him.
