Baptism/Christening
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 17:19 UTC (UK) »

Silly question, what is the difference between Baptism and christening?

Also, how can a child be Baptized before it is born? or would it be, as I would think somebody's "typo" as I have found this in 2 on-line trees, but have yet to check them with the census.
Anybody help a embarrassed Floggle Toggle?

The words have become interchageable. The child is being introduced to the Christian Church by giving a Christan name and anointing with water or immersion in the case of Baptists.
Adult Baptism is quite commonly seen but a pre birth ceremony is not possible. What is possible is that a child was born with that name and died and the next child born given the name.

Interchangeable in the 21st century but in the 19th century christening was naming baptism was accepting into the Church.
Parish registers contain many entries showing baptised & christened on the same date (not to be confused with private baptisms and later received into church).
Even to the extent of

RAVELL, SARAH, DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM RAVELL & HANNAH, BORN 18 SEP 1797, BAPTISED AT LONG BENNINGTON, CHRISTENED AT BOTTESFORD APR 12 1798.

Sorry for capitals cut & pasted from database to avoid transcription error.
The references to Long Bennington & Bottesford are references to C of E churches.
Other entries show examples such as

HALLAM, ZEBEDEE, SON OF WILLIAM HALLAM & ELIZABETH, Born 4 APR 1798,
BAPTISED AND CHRISTENED APRIL 29TH

Similar entries may be found in registers the length and breadth of England.
Cheers

Thanks for that, did not know about "private baptisms and later received into church".
