Dorset schools 1891
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 17:55 UTC (UK) »

I notice in the 1891 census there are three children of the Frederick family called Ada Caroline, Herman and Charles. Ada aged 11 is at The Dorset Girls' Industrial School in West Street, Poole.  Herman is 7 and is listed at school and at Weymouth Union. The same applies to Charles who is 5. That suggests the workhouse.
In 1881 the family are living at 17 Penny Street, Melcombe Regis. The father Henry is there born in 1852 in Germany. The mother Caroline was born in 1848 in Middlesex. The father is a tailor.
I cannot trace the parents anywhere in the 1891 census. It is possible they went to Germany. Can anyone throw any light on the school situation of the children in this part of Dorset in 1891?
Ada turns up again in 1901 in Marsden, Yorkshire; Herman marries Elizabeth Halsey in 1909 in Tynemouth. Charles and the parents do not reappear!
There appears to be something odd about the children's situation in 1891. Would someone be able to help solve this puzzle?

One of the reasons for children being in the Workhouse is that both their parents have died or mum has died and dad can't cope as he has to work

Have you checked for deaths on freebmd  http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

If only one death is found - perhaps the other re-married

I checked the deaths again and found one death with a different spelling, Fradrich instead of Frederick. Hermann Wilheim Fradrich died at Weymouth in 1888 at the age of 36. As his birth year was down in 1881 as 1852 then it seems highly likely that this was the death of the father of those three children. However, there is no sign of the mother with the same name or a remarriage.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you for the marriage. I wonder what happened to Caroline.
You thought it may have been the father, but it was the mother who could not cope as the father died.

I now note that Caroline Hampstead, the mother, was in a sanatorium in Melcombe Regis in 1871. It may be she returned there after the death of her husband
