Christmas Day2009

Hi,
I want to 'burn' some records from my computer. I haven't done this for a long time and now it seems very different. In fact it looks a lot easier. I printed off the instructions, from Windows, and followed them exactly but it won't work! I am told 'there is no CD in the D drive.' But there is! I am using XP and Cd Rewriteables can someone tell me where I'm going wrong, please?

Hi, Abiam,
I believe rewritable cd's have to be formatted before being used, otherwise XP can't "see" them.
If you want to store these records permanently you would be better off using the ordinary cdR's, which don't need formatting.

I think I'll have to find out how to format them as my OH has damaged his knee and can't drive - and I don't and we live in an isolated Spanish village! I thought while he was laid up I'd have a good old sort out. I managed to get a lift to the town especially to buy these.......... So should I change the title on this post or start a new one? "How do I format CD RWs"? Thanks for the advice Hat. Fed up Abiam

You'll need the apropriate software, something like "InCD" by Nero; I think you might be able to download a free version.
I used to use rewritable cd's, but the formatting process is slow, and the cd's seemed to be, sometimes, unreliable.
Good luck!

I agree with Downside
I've never had to use any specialised software at all. I've always relied on the Windows routine. I've saved photos, art work, word files, etc., etc. and had no problems whatsoever.
I tend to use usb flash drives and external hard drives now though.

PS - it also formats if the CDs aren't formatted

Hi, I have just googled to find out about formatting without success. Going into my Computer I see I have Nero (must be over 5 years old). So I tried again and again I get the same message. No disc in drive. I thought, as you say, Windows just do it. But they won't do it for me! Thank you both for your thoughts, Abiam

Try a different disk in your drive - or one that you have already got with data on - to see if it's the drive that's playing up.

I've done done that. Put in a cd R someone did for me and it's fine. And when that came up there are my files waiting to be burned! I must have tried half a dozen times now and I get the same message. In desperation I even tried putting it in the DVD drive and that doesn't work either. Have to be up very early in the morning so will leave it for now. Perhaps I'll wake up and find it works? Doubt it somehow, Abiam

We had the same problem with Memorex Cds, never did get them to work, and a friend also tried on his computer. I have just tried again as I have a new computer but get the same message as you but all others are ok.
Afraid this doesn't help you but shows you are not the only one to have problems.

I thought I'd show you the helpful reply frpm LG the manufacturers:
Product/Model No. : /HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE- 8400B Ihave the above CDwriter and the correct drivers but it will not work! I am told it may be the type of CD I am using. Please can you tell me which brand to buy, Thank you,
And this is their reply:
Thank you for your email.
The list of recommended brands is by no means an indicator of there being "restrictions" of what discs can be used with the unit. It simply means that these discs are "a sure bet" when choosing a brand. We will try to elaborate:
All CDs/DVDs have a specific code that instructs the machine as to the power level of the laser etc. If the machine doesn't recognise the code it won't be able to use it even though it may recognise the disc itself. A disc incompatibility issue is common to all optical drives, regardless of who the manufacturer is. There are countless number of brands on the market and different codes are used with different disc manufacturers. Some manufacturers use different factories at different times to manufacture the discs which creates inconsistencies in compatibility. (i.e. one batch of a certain brand can work perfectly well on the drive but the next batch doesn't.) The list of brands that LG recommend are known for their consistency in quality and codes used and as such there shouldn't be problems using these discs.
The technology used in the drive or what you are trying to burn on the disc have nothing to do with this.
Furthermore, "multi format" means that it work with multiple formats, which it does (these formats being CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM and

I have only used Verbatim in rewritables but a lot of different brands in the normal ones.
As I said earlier the ones which won't work are Memorex.
You could be a long way round the corner as I am in Northern Portugal near Oporto
