PRIOR or EDWARDS family in 1871?
« on: Wednesday 09 March 05 16:52 GMT (UK) »

Hello,

I am looking for any info I can get on the following family.  Here they are in the 1881 Census, living at "Lower Stream", East & West Hagbourne, Berkshire:

George PRIOR Head M  Male 27 b East Hagbourne, Berkshire Agric Labourer
Susan PRIOR Wife M Female 38 b Malmsbury, Wiltshire
Louisa M. EDWARDS Step Daur Female 11 b Newbury, Berkshire Scholar
Arthur PRIOR Son Male 3 b  Drayton, Oxford
Frank PRIOR Son Male 7 m b East Hagbourne, Berkshire

I have also found them in 1901, living in Blewbury (Berks), where Susan is listed as "Susanna".

From the BMD Indexes I have found the marriage of George PRIOR and Susan EDWARDS, June Quarter, 1876, in Abingdon (Berkshire/Oxfordshire)

I don't know if Louisa is a daughter from a previous marriage to Mr. Edwards, or if she was illegitimate.

Arthur came to Canada, but I don't know when.  He married in Canada in 1908 and died in WWI fighting in the Canadian forces.  I can't find him in the 1901 British or Canadian Censuses.

I'm having trouble because George Prior seems to be a pretty common name, and I don't have any info on his parents or siblings.  Could someone check the 1871 for George or Susan?  Any other info on George and Susan, or Arthur (my g-grandfather) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

MJP

Hi MJP

There are quite a few George PRIORs of about the right age in or born Berkshire in the 1871 census.  It will probably be necessary to purchase the marriage certificate to furnish some further details ie., hopefully, father's name etc. to help establish just which one of these is the correct one.

Best wishes

Hi casalguidi,

Thanks so much for all your work!  I think that family at Woolhampton House Lodge is likely Susans parents, if so then it looks like Louisa was illegitimate.  As for George I guess I'll have to keep digging and get some more info.  Thanks again!
