Lewis LOVELL
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 20:24 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have more information on Lewis Lovell born abt 1817 (Barnstaple, Devon, England)?

The 1851 census said he was married too Elizabeth.

I want to find out who Lewis Lovell`s parents names? And the maiden name and parents of Elizabeth. Does anyone have this information or know where I may find it. I am planning a trip to Devon later this year. So can look further then.  I live in south Wales.

Any advice or tips would be great. I am very new to family tracing.

Thanks

Alan

Hi Alan

There are a couple of clues in the 1851 where they are in Barnstaple.

1) Elizabeth age 26, born Barnstaple, a Lace Mender  and eldest child age 7.
This indicates they would likely have been married within period of Civil registration - ie: from Sep Qtr 1837+ and most likely after 1841. The fact they are all  born Barnstaple and living there, also indicates the couple likely married there.

2) There is a lodger in the house - Jane BEER age 12, b Barnstaple.
At such a young age, a Lodger is very possibly a relative.

FreeBMD have a marriage:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Mar Qtr 1844 - Barnstaple
Elizabeth BEER and John LOVELL or LOVILL on same page
Ref: Vol 10, page 65

Will see if I can see them on the 1841

Cheers

A birth record of one of the children would confirm Elizabeth maiden name as BEER, though it looks probable she was .

Having trouble finding Lewis in 1841 , though I think I've got Elizabeth (below) . The marriage was registered in the first (March) Qtr of 1844 so could have taken place any time from very late Dec 1843 to end March 1844. The document should hopefully give you the names and occupations of the father's of Lewis & Elizabeth.  Possible address' and witness on the certificate may also help.

This is interesting - appears Lewis, if this is the same person,  may have gotten himself in a spot of bother in 1844 too sometime after the date of the marriage - found this item indexed:
Devon trial date 9 Jul 1844 of Lewis Lovell age 29 (born abt 1815) - sentenced to a term of imprisonment.

Can someone have a look at the document on A* site  of the trial to see what it says?

Think this is Elizabeth in 1841:
1841: Union Street, Barnstaple
HO107 /  Piece 203 /  Book: 5 / Folio: 11 /  Page: 17
Elizabeth BEER 40 - Y
Elizabeth BEER 15 , Lace Factory, - Y
Susan BEER 13, Lace Factory - Y
James BEER 10 - Y
Jane BEER 4 - Y
Mary BEER 1 - Y

by 1851, I can't find a candidate for Elizabeth Snr. and I think  Susan BEER is in the Union Workhouse in Barnstaple, unmarried Servant, age 23, b Barnstaple, a Pauper with her 12day old un-named son.  HO107 / Piece: 1892 / Folio: 212/ Page: 14

The closest James BEER is an 18 yr old Tailors Apprentice in 1851 Barnstaple.
Jane age 4 in 1841, may be the 12 year old in 1851 with Lewis & Elizabeth - the ages don't quite match but there is a bit of fluidity in the Census over all for the ages of this family.....there is also a Jane BEER age 2 in Barnstaple with her parents.

Elizabeth (LOVELL)  is in the Census 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891.
Lewis LOVELL died 1863 (freeBMD) and she remarried  a John TALLYN  - I think this is the FreeBMD entry:

MARRIAGE: Sep Qtr 1875 Barnstaple
Elizabeth LOVEL and John TALLYER on same page
Ref: Vol 5b, page 791

Will post up all this Census 1861-1891 for you if need be - but checking first in case you already have it all!

Thank you kindly for your help.

In regards to getting the birth certificate for Lewis and Ann Lovell. How would I go about it? How far can you usually go back when getting certificates? What do they cost? Like I said I am very new to this.

Thanks Again
