« on: Thursday 29 October 09 22:30 UTC (UK) »

hi
my Jane heggie was born in 1872 in kingston surrey. on the 1911 census she is in the kingston union workhouse after that i don't know what happened to her. i been looking through the bmd indexes and came across this entry in devizes. Jane heggie age 75 Oct quarter 1950 7c 416. on the 1911 census they have her age 33 about 5yrs out so this one is 3 yrs out. how can i tell if this is the right one I'm looking for? she could have been transfered from kingston asylum institution to devizes

You say that
Quote
my Jane heggie was born in 1872 in kingston surrey

Yet in an earlier post you say
Quote
she was born 1872 in fulham London

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,414608.msg2809438.html#msg2809438

Have you bought credits and actually viewed the 1911 transcription - if so - you will know that it does not give her birthplace as either of those places and her birthyear is 1878

Are you sure she was in the Workhouse in 1911 - what are you basing that info on???

To avoid any possible duplication of info I am posting links to your other posts about Jane

Your post says she was in the Kingston Workhouse in 1911 - 20 yrs after her son was born

You have not answered the questions raised in my reply above

hi
i bought credits and looked at the institution transcipt. yes i notice there is no birth year and place, but if she was in a mental state perhaps she didn't know herself where and when she was born. if she was put there in 1902 its a good bet thats her.

As she was only in her early 30's in 1911 - she may have died after the period covered by the freebmd transcriptions

There are no probably marriages on freebmd/Ancestry for her

If you are unable to find a death on freebmd - you will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry or FMP subscription

It involves downloading the images for every quarter of every year from 1911 onwards and checking for an entry - very time consuming without more info

The address where she was a patient is on the 1911 transcript - why not contact Surrey Records Office and ask where the records are for that hospital and whether you would be able to have access

hi carole
i found a death record for Jane heggie in devizes 1950 age 75 Oct quarter 7c 416. there is a roundway county lunatic asylum which she could have been transfered from kingston. we have contacted surrey records office and they have a record for register of inmates 1906-1927. but Jane went in before 1906 will she still be registered

Are you certain she went into the asylum before 1906?  She is missing in 1901 but asylum records often don't show full details on a census return

Have you seen this item

So she was not in an institution in 1901 which means she could have been hospitalized anytime between 1901-1911

Was it normal practice to transfer patients from Surrey to Wiltshire?  It's approximately 90miles between the 2 places

You will just have to take a chance and buy the death cert

Unfortunately - anybody could report a death so if it is the right Jane Heggie and she died in the mental hosp - the death may have been reported by a staff member and you will be none the wiser but £7 poorer!!

However - that's the chance we all take with a death cert - although sometimes you do get info you don't expect
