Ewart Chatfield 1894
« on: Friday 30 October 09 01:09 UTC (UK) »

I'm needing help with info. regarding the following :

Ewart John Chatfield born 1894 in Brighton, Sussex

He married Winifred Kenward in 2nd Qtr of 1924 registered in Lewes, Sussex

Winifred died in 1930 and he subsequently married her sister Shocked Mabel Kenward in 1st Qtr of 1932 registered in Lewes, Sussex

I have tried to find further details but seem to be hitting a dead end!  I don't have any record of his death eg. where he died, the year he died, his final resting place etc. and wondered if anyone could do better than me at tracing him post 1932?!  Embarrassed

Anything would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers

Are you only looking for his death - in which case you will need to go through the full death indexes quartr by quarter from 1932 when he was last heard of, till say the 1980's when he would be in his 90's or so.

These are available on subscription sites, or at many local libraries.

Or Are you wanting early info on him too - like census look up 1901 ?

Hi there Grav

Because he married twice in Lewes, I thought it might be odds on that he is buried in Lewes.

I have checked the Burial Registers for St John Sub Castro, Southover, South Malling and All Saints - but they are not listed even though there are several families of Chatfield.

That leaves St Annes Without and St Michaels (Roman Catholic) churches as well as the Lewes cemetery where burials were made from 1854.

Sorry I cant be of more help

Hi

Thanks for the replies.  I have records upto his second marriage and then nothing afterwards and, unfortunately, I do not have the funds to join subscription sites so I have to rely on free sites and good old fashioned leg work!

Thanks for the trouble of looking through the Burial records Chris in 1066, I do appreciate it.  I have found on my search that many Chatfields seemed to have disappeared into the ether and are never seen or heard of again but I'll keep looking!  As I live not far from Lewes I have actually taken a walk round the Cemetery but to no avail so maybe my next step will be a visit to the other two churches (if they're still there!) to see if I can find anything there.

Thanks again.

If you live near Lewes then electoral rolls seem an obvious thing to search as if was living around there you can check when he disappears and then look for a death.  Worth a try anyway.

Hi,

I can see a Mrs E J CHATFIELD in the phone books 1952 - 1960, and I was wondering if she was 'your' Mrs Ewart John CHATFIELD.

Mrs E J CHATFIELD
52 Warleigh Rd,
Brighton
Publication Year: 1952 - Publication Year: 1960

When she stops being recorded I had a quick look for her death in case it helped, but instead I found Smiley

Death
Ewart J CHATFIELD    age: 66    Mar Q 1960    Cuckfield    5h  241

Daisy - now that's interesting!!

I wonder if the death record is the Ewart I'm looking for as I've not yet come across anyone else with the same name!!  If he died in 1960 then, having been born in 1894, he would have been 66 as the record states.  Did you find that information on a subscription website or somewhere that it can be easily accessed?

Thanks for the information, it could prove to be the breakthrough I've been looking for! Smiley

Hi,

I found the phone record on subscription websites. However I think Ancestry is available free at some local libraries.
