Hi Suffolker
To help others to connect into your post, it may be useful for them to know that William MARR married Lavinia CARR in DENNISTOUN GLASGOW in 1895........
......and that David LAWRENCE married Elizabeth BAXTER in ARBROATH in 1897.

Hi Suffolker
hi! ibi thanks for replying to my post Nae prob
these people are the great grandparents of my wife and all i knew of them is what the family in dundee can remember you have now given me a big help in tracing my wife,s scottish ancesters many thanks suffolker What you need to do now is to register and buy some credits at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and pay to view the images of the register entries for these two marriages. Scottish registers include the names of both parents,
Based on the ages of the brides and grooms you can then look for their birth records and/or census entries; followed by the register entries for the mariages of the respective parents, as long as they were married in 1855 or later.
Transferring your attention to deaths should take you back at least one more generation; Scottish death register entries include the names of both parents and the name of any spouse.
All the above are on line on a pay per view basis.
Could this be wee Lavinia in 1881?............
163 Stirling Road, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Age Birthplace Joseph CARR 39 England Head, Engine Keeper Henrietta CARR 45 Bo ness, Linlithgow, Scotland Wife Lavinia CARR 8 Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland Daur
It looks like the CARR line goes back to England!
Good hunting !

IGI at www.familysearch.org is excellent for Scotland in the period from the start of official registration up to 1874ish when the Mormons stopped loading on Scottish records. It's a really useful resource to use in conjuction with Scotlands People where possible. For example, David and Elizabeth's births show there in Arbroath with parents' names which, once you have viewed their marriage cert., will let you verify their birth entry. You can then view the original entry on SP. Scottish birth certs. post 1862ish also include date and place of parents' marriage, a useful piece of info if you are struggling to find their marriage.
Useful guide here on RC for Scottish research resources www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html
Also this one, for getting the best use of Scotlands People www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,43916.0.html

Thought the 1871 census entry might clear up where Joseph is showing as his birth place...but can't find them on the transcript as yet
And...not sure what had happened by 1891 as Lavinia and mother show with Henrietta's children from her first marriage. The original image on SP would confirm her marital status (married/widowed):
William Eckford 33, Commission Agent (Brushes) b. Edinburgh Henreitta Carr 56, mother b. Boness Henreitta Eckford 27, sister b. Edinburgh Lavania Carr 18, half sister b. Edinburgh Matthew Caldwell 62, uncle, Fruit Porter b. Boness
Have you found a birth entry for Joseph Carr with the parents as showing on his marriage entry to Henrietta?

You might have hit a problem here. The IGI entry is a member submitted entry, not from actual extract from the Old Parish Registers. As useful to see as submitted entries can be, you will need to verify this info elsewhere as submitted entries can be plain wrong. I cannot see a corresponding entry on the OPRs on SP at this stage (trying for Carr/Kerr etc)
It may simply be that his birth/christening doesn't show on the OPRs which are for Presbyterian records of the established Church of Scotland. His family may have belonged to a breakaway denomination or Roman Catholic for example. These records don't show on the OPRs.
It may also be, given that you are in a period before the start of official registration, that his birth was not registered or Registers have been lost/destroyed over the years.
Census info is probably key at this stage.

Arnie, what was the occupation for Joseph's father William on his marriage cert.? Did his parents show as alive or deceased?
