I have a death certificate obtained a while back, but put it aside as I didn’t think it was my Henry. The death certificate is as follows:- died on 23rd January 1914 in Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary. Henry O’Neill age 39 years. 6 of 35 Park Lane. A General Porter. Cause of death = Disseminated sclerosis, certified by W.P. Philips. MB. Informant it says = W. Bray, Governor Liverpool workhouse. The death was registered on 24th January 1914.
Henry was my Grand father’s brother, he was born in London on 14/7/1875. (So the age is correct on the obtained certificate) The whole family moved to Suffolk, which is where I have done all my family history research. Henry married Louisa Palmer on 25/1/1902, certificate says she was 33, Widow. Louisa’s maiden name was Pearl. They were married in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, and Henry was an engineer.
Then I couldn’t find any further trace of them until the 1911 census when I discovered them living at 80 Egerton St., Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Henry age 37. Birth year given as 1874. Occupation = Flour Millwright. Louisa is 40 born 1871, Born Bury St Edmunds (Enumerator has put Lans., but that is incorrect). I am sure this is them on the 1911 census, but am unsure about this death certificate.
Has any one any ideas if this is Henry’s death certificate. Is it possible to obtain records from the workhouse infirmary? There are a number of possibilities of Louisa remarrying in Liverpool, but am not sure. Any information about the workhouse infirmary, and where he may have been buried would be gratefully received. I am presuming that moving to Ellesmere Port would have been for work, although from engineer to flour millwright seems a very different occupation.
Any ideas? With thanks,
Mary.

Hi,

This website is an excellent source of information on workhouses.
www.workhouses.org.uk
If you find the Liverpool section you can read about Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary.
The records for Liverpool should be at Liverpool Records Office (if they have survived). Their email address is:-
recoffice.central.library@liverpool.gov.uk
I have been researcing relatives who died in Chorlton Union Workhouse and a good friend managed to find entries in the Death Registers at Manchester Library but I have not found any burials. I think the workhouses had their own cemeteries which have now been closed. In my case, the burials were moved to a public cemetery when a new road was built but the names were not recorded .
If records have survived, there should also be Admission Registers too.
Hope you find something useful.
Luzzu

Hi,
Your Henry was an Engineer on his marriage to Louisa in 1902. By 1911 his occupation was Flour Millwright in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. I am just a little dubious that the death certificate was for a Henry who was a General Porter in the Liverpool Workhouse. By the way, a Millwright was someone who designed, built and maintained mill machinery.
Have you seen the death of a Henry O`Neill who died in 1941 in the sub-district of Chester Castle aged 65. This is on www.Cheshirebmd.org.uk and Chester Castle covered Ellesmere Port.
Regards, Mo

Thank you Luzzu for that information.
Mo thanks for that. Yes, I too am very uncertain about that death certificate, but I had already obtained it before the 1911 came out! and as it gives no family info' was not very helpful!!
I had not come across the Cheshirebmd web site, but have just looked at it and it has possibilities, Henry is the correct age at 65, so thank you very much for that, am now contemplating whether to get the certificate or not!! It makes more sense for him to stay in Cheshire then going to Liverpool. (Am not at all familiar with the area, maps had to be looked at!) So thanks for that. Will let you know what I do! & the outcome.
Mary.
