hello, I'm looking for any info on Kan Shimasaki who settled in the East End of London early in 1900s. I know he was a ships carpenter, but not sure when he arrived in this country, thanks.

The incomong passenger lists have more than one K Shinozaki - could one be him? Cant see a Shimasaki. - do you have an age or year of birth for your guy, even if approximate? Where did he arrive from - was it Japan?

That name is definitely listed in the index of the 1911 census, living in Poplar, London, age 45 with a Jane age 33 and another Jane age 1. Also in the household is a Sarah Haley age 60. For more information you would need to use credits to see the image.

so ... he was born about 1866 and arrived before 1908 .... I'll look again at incoming passenger lists!
modified to add: nothing very conclusive there.

If he came as crew he might not be listed. If he continued as a merchant seaman beyond 1918 there might be records for him at the NA.

Hello all, Thanks for all the quick replies and your help!! I have done family research before but have been having a break for a while, just taken it up again and this is the first time on 'Roots'. gortonboy I did see that other researcher, think she is related but as you say it was a while ago since she was looking. Sarah Haley [on the 1911C] is my great grandmother, her daughter Margaret [sister to Jane] is my grandmother. I have found quite a bit on that side of my family, but I've not long found out about Kan and the right spelling of Shimasaki, there had been some confusion. My dad had spoken of meeting once, someone in the family, a sailor who wore a scarf on his head and an earring, so I'm wondering if this was him.. I was wondering if Kan had arrived here as crew and just stayed. Was it easy for this to happen in those days and did the authorities take any notice? But then again would he have had his name on the census if he was illegal and would he have been discovered through the census? Thanks Mary A, I'll have to look up the 1911C. and once again thankyou all for your help.
