Henry Houghton in South Africa
« on: Friday 30 October 09 13:59 UTC (UK) »

I would be grateful if someone could help me with the following:
Great great uncle Henry Houghton born 13 Oct 1884 and lived in Halebank, Widnes, Lancashire, England. He went to Cape town (I think) South Africa to live, but he returned from South Africa in 1921 on the ship 'SAXON' to visit relatives. He returned to visit relatives on several occasions over the decades.

However I am trying to find out when he went to South Africa in the first place. It is possible that he went to South Africa in 1904 or 1908, as there seems to be some evidence of a H Houghton of the right age travelling between Southampton and Cape, but I have no idea if it is the right person nor the name of the ship. If anyone can offer some information such as when he went to South Africa and on what ship; what he did in South Africa (some say he was a detective and other say he was involved in the Hotel trade) and when he died. I know he was alive in 1957 as he visited relatives in England for the last time.

Thankyou for your time and assistance. Much appreciated.

Hi there,
Ican see that you have found that he traveled a number of times to the UK from South Africa. On the one occasion he was with his wife Evelyn Mary. In Naairs, the archives, there is a death notice for a Mary Evelyn Houghton in 1943. It may be worth applying for the death notice from the archives or ask a nice kind person to do a look up for you. Ouma may be able to oblige if she is not too busy.
cant see anything else yet.

Hi

He arrived in Southampton, England on the following ship:
18 Jul 1921       Saxon
9 Jun 1939       Capetown Castle
28 May 1948    Athelone
8 May 1953      Edinburgh Castle
10 May 1957    Winchester Castle

I have not found any occasions of when he travelled with a wife. It was believed that he did not marry.

Can you tell me some details about the record you have found when he travelled with his wife?
eg: Date; Name; Year of Birth; Ship; Arrival port; Embarked Port; Address.

Also do you have access to records of Ships that left England and arrived in South Africa? As I'm trying to get info of when he went to South Africa.

Cheers

Can I assume that no one has any access to /info on the following South Africa queries:
  • any ships and their passengers that sailed from the UK to South Africa?
  • dates; names; addresses of known immigrants to South Africa?

Let me know if this site/forum cannot help with this type of query.
Thanks.

Hi there,
Research in South Africa is extremely difficult as the records are very few and far between. All rootschatters do research out of the goodness of their hearts so it is not a question of the site not being able to cope with the query but whether people are prepared to put effort in to help if their information is doubted.  There is no South African database for immigrants. We don't even have access to marriages or births. Our best resource is Naairs the national archives for death notices - see sticky's about research in South Africa. Passenger lists early on were very lean on details. I cannot find 4 of my families that I know traveled here.

In 1939 he is travelling to UK with an Mary Evelyn Houghton b 1892, he as retired, she as a housewife. They returned on the 21 September 1939 as H Houghton and Mrs Houghton, married, with an address in Hale Bank as their UK connection. This certainly seems to indicate that they were married. Her death notice is the best clue you can find to him as there is no other reference for any Henry Houghton in the archives.

Hi
Many thanks for clarifying the situation and the info on the 1939 voyage.

Previously you mentioned someone called Ouma who might be able to help me, can you advise me on how would I contact her?

Your help has been very much appreciated.

Find My Past has him on a trip back out to S A on the ship KINFAUNS CASTLE on 7 October 1921  departing from Southampton bound for Cape, South Africa.

It lists him as a detective and being 36.His last address in the UK was the one you said, Halebank Lancs.

Hi again,
Ouma has posted a topic on the South Africa board - just look down the page a bit. Just send her a PM and she may be able to help you.
