Being driven slowly mad & blaming my ancestors
|
Hi Guys
I’m trying to pin down the parents of John ELLIS born about 1830.
I’ve got his marriage information from the St John’s Parish Register as:
06 April 1851, Parish of St John, Chester
John ELLIS, Aged 21, Bachelor, Railway Porter, Steam Mill Street, Father: Thomas ELLIS, Miller to Betsey DAVIES, Aged 20, Spinster, Handbridge, Father: Timothy DAVIES, Miller
This puts John’s birth around 1830.
I’ve been onto the Cheshire Parish Register Project to look for his baptism and the most plausible is at St. John’s
11 March 1832 John ELLIS (twin) s/o Thomas and Ellen, Miller, Stephen Street and Mary ELLIS (twin) d/o Thomas and Ellen, Miller, Stephen Street
Other children of this couple appear to be:
29 August 1824 Eleanor ELLIS d/o Thomas and Eleanor, Miller, Milton Street
Or
01 March 1824 Eleanor ELLIS d/o Thomas and Eleanor, Miller, Mill Street.
The possible marriage would be
12 May 1823 St. John Thomas ELLIS, Widower, Miller to Ellen JOLLEY, Spinster
I’m wondering how possible this is and if anyone could provide information re: Thomas’ previous marriage.
Thanks

Gosh - this is rushing ahead at a rate of knots! It might be best to slow down a bit and confirm each step a bit if you can before moving on.
First of all, the marriage. Is that the only reason that you think he was born in 1830 ish - that it says age 21 on the marriage cert? If you havent already it would be worth finding him on the censuses to confirm when and where he says he was born - just 'cos he married at St Johns doesnt mean he was born there!
If form censuse info, that birth still looks likely then have you found that family in 1841? and so on ...
You may be on the right track, or may not - but if you go one step at a time you are more likely not to stray and follow the wrong guy!
If yuo havent got census access and need help just shout.

1851 HO107 2172 276 31
the newly weds are with the inlaws (Timothy Davies and family) in Hadbridge, Chester St Bridgets. both aged 21
I see that two Betsy's siblings are twins - so if John was a twin too they had twin genes from both sides!

This look slike John in 1841 Ho107 129 10
Russel Street, St John
Thomas 35 miller Ellen 35 Ellen 13 Mary 10 John 8 Sarah 5
the childrens ages do not tie up brilliantly with the baptisms. And this Thomas is too young to have made a second marriage in 1823.
So it looks like there might be more work to be done at this point!

Thanks for all the help.
I've not managed to find him on the 1841 cen.
His birth being c.1830 is from the marriage cert and
1851 as above b. c.1830 1861 living at 29 Gloucester Street b. about 1830 1871 living in Trafford Street b. about 1830 1881 living at 41 Gloucester Street b. about 1830 1891 living at 41 Gloucester Street b. about 1830
Burried 09 May 1899 at Overleigh Cem. Grave number: G7709 Died 05 May 1899 aged 69 years according to Overleigh database (infered birth about 1830)
The place of birth is always given as Chester. I'm assuming that he was born within the parish of St. John as this is where he married and his bride is from the parish of Hanbridge.
From my understanding of the 1841 census is that the ages are rounded up to the nearest 5 or 10 in the most part so there is always leaway with the ages.
