Hi, If you have the time, I wonder if you could please check up on a marriage: Samuel Martimer = Nanny Pyrah 1803 Bradford, according to the LDS
I believe this should probably be Mortimer. But could you confirm whether this is the Samuel Mortimer born 1776 in Birstall, with a father John? I'm hoping this is going to be the Samuel Mortimer Living with an Ann in Horton in the 1841 census, as this is definitely my g.g.g. grandfather.
It would be wonderful to trace Samuel back a bit further. Thank you so much for this offer

:)Hello, I did get the other message - I share the email address.
I'm afraid all I know is that Samuel and Nanny were married in "Bradford 1803". HER father, Joseph Pyrah had been born in "Bradford 15 Nov 1739", so that doesn't help with narrowing an area for the marriage.
I think perhaps it's best to assume it IS the Samuel Mortimer who was born in Birstall that married her, until proven differently! Otherwise there are too many options for you. Oh, but I suppose they married from HER house, which might have been anywhere....Please just look at Birstall, then if her father's name is Joseph, we've cracked it
I don't know if this would be to hand for you at the same time, but I'd love to know anything about the Joshua Pyrah b.1660, Bradford, buried 28th May 1712 Bradford Parish Church, such as if it mentions occupation.
Thank you so much for making this offer Regards Myrrh

Hi, Sorry only Mortimer I could find at St.Peter's Birstall was a Joseph. So maybe they married in Bradford. You say they lived in Horton which is in Bradford. Do you know the address they lived at or what religion .

Oh dear. Thanks anyway.
The address on the 1841 census for Samuel Mortimer and family is Park Place, Horton, Bradford. It states he is 65 years old and is a Wool Sorter. The other places mentioned on the census page for the neighbours are Park Lane, and Horton Green.
When his son Joseph married in Stockport, in 1844 it was under the rites of the Roman Catholic Church, but then he married an Irish woman...
BUT, I don't know if it will help. but when he was divorcing her, in 1861, he mentions taking his two sons to "Chapel". By the time the 1861 census appears, the family is split up and I can't find Joseph. However, in 1851 he and his family were living at 12 Patchett Street, Chorlton Road, Hulme, which I believe is near Manchester. I'll have a look to see if I can find some sort of Chapel listed as being around there. I wonder if you have knowledge of any Chapels around Horton in 1841? I'll have a search myself, but have to go now. Many thanks for trying to help me. Myrrh

Hi again,
There are Methodist Chapels in the area where my g.g. grandfather Joseph Henry Mortimer was living in 1851, and looking at Horton in 1841 there are also chapels:
Horton Bank Methodist Chapel exisits, (but built 1871) In 1815 Weslyans moved from Chapel of 1766 (doesn't say what address!) to a larger chapel in Little Horton Lane. Anyway, I have a feeling they were Methodists, but can't discount Catholic, due to Joseph's later marriage. Joseph Henry Mortimer was born c1822, if that helps at all..
I know the Samuel that married Nanny Pyrah in 1803 in Bradford is the right one (there was another around the time, in Tong, - also with a Joseph....)
I was trying to wrap this up, as my remaining Aunt is 80 now and not well - she is interested, but I think she really wants us to be descended from the Earls of March Mortimers - so I think anyway I'll be disappointing her Anyway, I tried. Thanks so much. Myrrh

Thank you for your time, John.
I better explain why I think the marriage between Samuel Mortimer and Nanny Pyrah is the right one. She was born in Suffolk, as this is what she states in the 1851 census, so I need a wife for S.M. born in Suffolk. . I don't believe this matches with the other options I've seen for women marrying Samuel Mortimers around this time in the area. (She was christened Church of England by the way, so no help there.)
You are a gem for having one last go at this.
Mary

Thank You Dave, I'd be very interested in seeing them. I THINK I can assume the two Samuels are the same... Will PM you with my email address.
