Odd surname; IVOL
« on: Friday 30 October 09 16:59 UTC (UK) »

A distant relation bore the surname Ivol; Florence Ivol.
Not a name I've ever come across, but does anyone else recognise it?

Hi  Smiley

A  quick search on  the IGI brings up a few IVOLs -  mainly in Glasgow. Variants given are mostly Ivel and Ev/a/e/i/ll.

Where did she come from?

Only one showing but that's less than 100yrs ago.

Not sure of Florence's place of birth or domicile, but her spouse/partner hailed from Perth originally.

That's the one  - a patron submission on the IGI. Parents and spouse are give.  I'd check Scotland's People  if I were you.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You won't be able to download the certs directly but you could order them via the website .

Just checked on the SP site and she is showing so you'd be able to order her birth and marriage certs.

22 Ivels shown on ONS website in England and Wales in 2002. No Ivols shown, this in practise means under 5 instances. No information for Scotland.

If it is any help, the Surname Atlas shows there were only seven people with the name in the whole of the British Isles in the 1881 census, they were all in Lanark.

Think her father was born in Glasgow (Blythswood) in 1882.

Working the likely birth dates back I'd reckon Florence to have been born circa 1925 to 1920 if that's any help, but I think Gadget is on the right line there.
I need to dig deeper methinks given the Flynn connection anyway, so a visit to the records office in Edinburgh may be useful?

She was born 1918, Perth, Jake,  and those are the correct parents - Alexander took off 6 years on his marriage cert.  Wink

It is getting near the cut off birth date for her to be mentioned on Roots by full name, though, and I don't see a death for her in Scotland  Undecided

As you believethat she is now deceased, i think it should be OK  Smiley

The IGI has this birth/baptism in Duffus which looks as if it could well be great grandfather:

22 March 1814 (bapt. 28 March) Alexander Ivel
Parents - John Ivel and Elspet Forsyth

There seems to be quite a cluster of Ivol/Ivels in Moray
