Whose wife and from where?

can someone have a look at Margaret Howe please..

I think it says Wife and her age, 42.

If this is correct, whose wife is she? Samuel Snr is still married to Sarah. I think it says Samuel Jnr is only 20 and although it says he is married, surely his wife wouldn't be more than twenty years older than him? Could it say 40 and not 20? Could hers say 18 with a very lopsided 8?

And where does she come from - is it Ireland?

Eyes and opinions needed please.

It could well be 18, because the 0 on the 20 above is slanted isn't it.  Yes, I think she came from Ireland.

I agree with Su - I've seen odd eights like that before - and we all know enumerators were inconsistent spellers

Hi Gengen,

I've looked on the next page of the census - at 48 High Street, and the eight looks exactly the same as on Margaret's age - must be 18.

Yes, I saw that one, Jackie and wondered if it could be him. As he isn't a direct ancestor, I don't particularly want to be spending money on him at the moment but it is certainly the right sort of time and place.
There is a Margaret Howe, aged 30, married, born Ireland, lodging in Hackney in 1861 but no sign of a husband so I'm none the wiser.

Hello again,

I don't know if you've looked at Seax recently, but they are slowly digitising some old Essex PR's.  Tillingham is on, but up to now, baptisms are 1696 to 1783.

If you haven't already seen it - the register is in a terrible mess......pages torn and damaged.  Urghhh...
