WW2 Lost Airman
« on: Friday 30 October 09 18:22 UTC (UK) »

I have been trying to get information about my fathers cousin, Flight Sergeant Charles Roland Metcalfe, 1010560, 76 Sqdn, who went missing 4 June 1942.

I wonder where they were based, type of aircraft, mission etc . What was the function of a flight sgt

According to the entry on www.cwgc.org he was a flight sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve  76 Squadron.

76 Sqdn were based at RAF Middleton St George between June 1941 - September 1942. It looks as if they flew Halifaxes.
If you google RAF Middleton St George you should find a site about the history of the base. I am sorry I am not computer-literate enough to provide you with the link.

A flight sergeant is a rank above a sergeant and below a warrant officer. The name itself does not imply any specific duties or responsibilities. The badge of rank is three stripes (as a sergeant) with a crown above. Sometimes referred informally as  a "chief".

Thanks everyone, have checked the websites suggested and have a lot more info now.

I notice that 76 Sqdrn was involved with the raids on the Tirpitz, is there a way of finding out if Roland Metcalfe took part in these.

Hi

I have put a posting on a topic about FS Anderson and gave the address for the 76 Sqn Assn and I am sure they would be able to help you.  You could also look up the aircrew memorial site as they have some crews on there plus you can post a topic on their and may get an answer.

Good luck

Dee, not sure about the ref's to FS Anderson, I'm looking for CR Metcalfe.

Since my earlier posts I have found more info from the "Bombercommand website" and it appears that RC Metcalfe did not fly on the Tirpitz missions.

My daughter has ordered and received today the book "To see the dawn break -- 76 Sqdn" (a signed copy by WR Chorley) he email to me says that CR Metcalfe is mentioned once but unfortunately no photo.

Will follow up the 76 Sqdn assoc to see what info they have

I obtained a copy of Bill Chorleys book and have received info from 76 Sqdn Assoc, telling me that Sgt Metcalfe wa primarily a W/Operator but for his final mission was serving as the mid upper gunner.

Thanks for everyones input
