edinburgh street names
« on: Friday 30 October 09 19:35 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have any books on Edinburgh street names. I am interested in Prospect Street/Terrace which was in the Dumbiedykes area. The whole area was demolished in the 50's and 60's. I would like to know where the name Prospect came from and if possible when the street was built.

Hi

In Edinburgh, Prospect in a street name is generally derived from the view it provides.

The best book about Edinburgh street names is The Place Names of Edinburgh by Stuart Harris.  It was originally published in hardback in 1992 and there was a paperback edition in 2002 (ISBN 1-904246-06-0)

It states that Prospect Street was developed in 1869 and Prospect Place and Terrace in 1870.  The name refers to the views of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags.

Thanks everyone , knowing when the area was developed was what I needed to know. The link for the photographs is excellent.
