1896 Marriage Wright - Pole
« on: Friday 30 October 09 22:10 UTC (UK) »

This might be one for Mike. I promised a mystery some time ago, and this is the first attempt to find more out. My grandparents William Wright and Mary Ann Pole were married in Hinckley in June qtr 1896. This in itself is surprising because Gran came from centuries of Belgrave Poles and that's where they went to live. William was born in 1874 in Hinckley workhouse, his mother, Annie Wright, subsequently married a widower William Odell and had several more children, but William Wright had left by the age of 16 for Leicester. I am really interested if the marriage certificate gives a "Father's Name", and who were the witnesses.

Greeting’s Again. ….Richard.

I’m sorry to say I trawled ALL the Marriage Registers for the Parishes within the borough of Hinckley  1843. ~ 1910.
But drew a blank I’m afraid…….. Cry

My educated guess………… Is that they either married as nonconformists
( I did look within the Nonconformist Records for Hinckley but it was not covered for the year we wanted )
Or
It was a Registry Office Marriage in Hinckley.
In which case the Records Office does not hold these……

So……its hand in your pocket time I’m afraid ....... Embarrassed
and purchase the marriage Certificate
Via the usual outlets.

The Ref. No’. you require is ……..

June Qrt. 1896.

William Wright. ~ Mary Ann Pole.
HINCKLEY.
Cert No’. 7a. 116.

Both names check out for this Ref. No’. via the G.R.O. site

Thanks Mike - I suppose I should have realised. My Gran was a lifelong (well until she followed us to Worcestershire in the '50s) member of Claremont Street Methodist. That's why I couldn't understand them marrying in Hinckley. I wonder if her family didn't approve of him. Perhaps they changed their mind by the '20s when he built a large house for himself in the front of his yard in Loughborough Road, and then a couple of years later (fed up with people coming to the door on business when he was not working) gave it to my uncle and built the same house again in Birstall.
I'll be in touch again when I've got the certificate, because I don't expect the mystery to be solved that easily!
