How much money - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 30 October 09 23:17 UTC (UK) »

I am stuck, again.

I have a 1657 Leicestershire Will that uses the old way of writing money.

"as will make ?..xx xx..? to each"

"of them ?x..? to buy each"

Could some one please fill in the blanks & translate them for me please.

Regards
Grantley

Is the first one make upp? xxld meaning £20? Or is that superscript ls (lowercase L followed by an s) to make pounds plural?

Don't know about the next one, except there is only one x, so perhaps 10 shillings?

Or somesuch ...

Thankyou Koromo.
I checked and yes, the u & p of upp are consistant with other parts of the Will, including the "funny" spellings in this Will.

I am not familiar with the ld but I too guessed £. I was hoping that someone could confirm it.

I have 2 other money references in this Will and was wondering if they were the same symbols of ld.

"brother Robert xxld"

"him as Stonesby ?. ld?

Grantley

Just to piss in the dills (as my father would have said), the last two instances look like the short form for "et cetera" to me: &c (where the "c" is superscript).

Without seeing the rest of it, no idea if that makes any sense at all....

I think brother Robert & Stonesby got shillings not pounds!
There are some very useful  sites which you may find helpful,  just google 'Secretary Hand Script'
Good Luck

Whoops, forgot to say, there wouldn't have been a £ sign as the symbols are in Roman money units
L = libra = pound
s = solidi = shilling
d = denarii = pence

Hence the Lsd which I learned at school!!!!

Thankyou Hephzibah

S for shillings sounds logical, plus it is similar to the S in Stonesby.

The part ""him as Stonesby" may read one shilling. I have seen where the i for one, is sometimes written as a j. This could be a fancy "i".
