I need Help Please (Tenessee) 1839
« on: Friday 30 October 09 23:58 UTC (UK) »

Huh Hi can anyone help in tracing a birth record for one of my family born in Tennessee in 1839. Possibly Brownsville? Although I am unsure. Mary Ann Todd was born there according to ship immigration records from my GGGrandfather. He was William Todd Born 1810 in Durham England and his wife Ann was born in Essex England in 1806. They went to the U.S. sometime after 1835 and before 1839 and left prior to 1841 where they are shown on the England census.
They then migrated to Australia in 1854.
Any help please. Tongue

Since the US does not have a State sponsored religion, and since individual states and within them, counties, have always had responsibility for vital record keeping, it is very unusual to find these records prior to the late 1890s and early 1800s.

Here is a sentence from a site that lists where to obtain records in Tennessee:  Few births and deaths were recorded by civil authorities before 1908. You may find some information on pre-1908 births and deaths in genealogies, histories, church and Bible records, and collections of personal papers.  (emphasis mine).

Sorry, but that is the way it is.

Thanks Nick, I had hoped that someone with some idea of the history of that area may have picked up on my request. I know it is a longshot but the mystery of their round trip is perplexing. I would have thought that in 1839 the area was not heavily settled and a list of Voters or county members may have been in existence. Your help is appreciated. Undecided

Hi Neil:

My husband has ancestors from Tennessee.  I haven't done too much research on this branch (they had a common surname); it is very difficult to find "early" records.

There are two Brownsvilles in Tennessee: one in Haywood County, the other in Houston County.

In 1840, there were 7 William/Wm Todd's living in Tennessee, one had the middle initial J.

They were living in the following counties: Cannon, Hardeman, Marshall, Rutherford and Lawrence.

Family member's names are not included on the 1840 census returns, only gender and general ages (5 and under 10, 30 and under 40, etc.).  (Only heads of families are listed by name.)

Hi Lisa, Many thanks for the info and web address. I will have a good look to see if anything relevant. You said about a common surname in my line there are many, many William's, Wm. This can make it incredibly hard to get on to the right one. Huh

Although settled for around thirty years in 1839 Tennessee was still a bit of a frontier and may have attracted my family because of land or work possibilities.
Maybe I will never know, but it does make interesting reading. Lots of Todd's there even then.
