John Ogle and Rosanna Hughes
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 03:24 UTC (UK) »

My ancestor John Ogle was transported to Australia in 1840 for stealing 4 "flitches" of bacon. His wife went to work as a house servant and the children were put a workhouse (Alnwick Union Workhouse) I found them in the 1841 census.
In 1850 Rosannnah brought the family out to Australia (Hobart) and I have a copy of a letter she wrote to the Colonial Secretary complaining about the treatment the children received!
After John received his Conditional Pardon, they went to Port Fairy, Victoria (it was known as "Belfast" in those days)
I have yet to start searching for John's trial records etc. I was wondering if anyone else had an interest in Ogles from Northumberland and suspect it is not an uncommon name in this area?

Yep, that's his convict sheet from VanDiemen's Land.
Thanks for the info on Woodhorn, I'll get in touch with them for sure.
Are there any further records from the Alnwick Union workhouse? Where would they be kept?
And if anyone looking thinks they may have a connection to John...

Hi Roger, if you go to the workhouses site at:

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

and put Alnwick in the search box there is info there and maps/plans. it also lists which records are held at Woodhorn.

Hi Roger,
Just to say that the name Ogle is unusual and not too many about.
Going to send you a PM, not too helpful, but may be in future!
