Hi, I've been trying to work out a bit of a confusing case in my tree of a Samuel Pigott born around 1837 in Sheffield.
I was having a lot of trouble finding him for some years in the census, but eventually found out that he had called himself Samuel Anderson in 1861 and 1871, and then had reverted to being Samuel Pigott in 1881, 1891 & 1901.
Some of his children also used the name Anderson or Henderson as a surname or had the name Anderson or Henderson as their middle name.
I got a copy of Samuel's marriage certificate and he is named as Pigott, but his father is named as William Anderson, a cutler.
This Anderson name has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works, becuase I thought Samuel's parents were Samuel and Ann Pigott, who I had him living with in the 1841 and 1851 census, and had found a baptism for in 1837 in Sheffield Parish Church.
I've been trying to find William Anderson/Henderson, or a baptism for Samuel as either Pigott or Anderson/Henderson, or any marriages between Pigott's and Anderson/Hendersons on Ancestry, IGI, sheffieldindexers.com and every web site I can think of but have had no luck. They don't seem to have the parish records for the right time period available.
So, here are my questions:
1. Are there any baptisms in Sheffield around 1837 for a Samuel Pigott? (APART FROM the one I have already found which is at Sheffield Parish Church, May 7 1837, parents Ann & Samuel)
2. Are there any baptisms in Sheffield around 1837 for a Samuel Anderson or Henderson? (With a father called William)
3. Are there any marriages in Sheffield at any time between a Pigott and an Anderson or Henderson?
4. Do you have any other ideas, explanations, advice about this? Because I am stumped!
Thanks a million for any help and advice, Cate
