Hello from Australia.
|
Does anyone know where I can obtain some information on the Copeland family of the Copeland Islands, located off the County Down coast? I am descended from a Copeland family from Donaghadee and could be connected.
Regards,
Era

Thanks for the websites. They look like they might be useful. I have been googling and browsing forums so far, without much luck. I will keep on hunting, but if anyone finds anything in the meantime, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Era
With regards to the reply from Gopher , like her mother I too hail from Donaghadee and have never heard of a Copeland family from the island.
I was always told the island was named after a Norman family called De Coupland.
A survey carried out in 1732 by John Sloane states there were four tenants on the Big Island(Copeland) by the name of James Brown, Andrew Agnew, Alexander Agnew and James McCalder. In the middle of the eighteenth century the islands where purchased by Mr David Ker of Portavoe and about this time the tenants of the island changed, the McCalders and Agnews left and the Cleggs, Emmersons and Wrights arrived. These families where able to buy their holdings under the Land Act and their descendants lived on the islands until the 1940s. The above details are to be found in the book by W.G. Pollock ' Six Miles from Bangor , The Story Of Donaghadee"

Thank you to all for this information. The person from whom I found out about Copelands on Copeland Islands must have their information wrong - I will have to check. Even if there were Copelands on the islands at any stage, it is probably to far back for any connection to be made.
I appreciate all you assistance.
Regards,
Era
