« on: Saturday 31 October 09 06:58 UTC (UK) »

I believe they had 7 children. He was married to Isabella Harrower 1806-? He emigrated to Australia.. Looking for information  on his parents. His daughter Barbara, married in Sydney, Australia to Charles Brown abt 1855.

Hi Southern

In the 1841 Census entry for the family in Newburgh, Fife, Mathew shows as born outside the county of Fife. Wonder whether this could be his christening entry on IGI:

MATHEW SPEEDIE Christening: 22 DEC 1805 Abernethy, Perth
Parents: ALEXANDER SPEEDIE (mother's name not included on the entry)

This 1851 entry corresponds with the 1841 household. Maybe father Matthew joined his children after 1851, can't see him in 1861 - spellings as transcribed:

Matthew Speedet 44, innkeeper b. Abernethy Perthshire
Mary Speedet 13, b. Newburgh
Alexander Speedet 11, b.Newburgh
Elizabeth George 32, servant

Address: Eastern Suburbs Comt Inn, Newburgh

Wow that was quick! Thank you so much Monica!. Yes, it is the same person, I believe his father was Alexander (no details yet). He will not be in the Scottish 1861 census as he was residing in Australia then.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Glen, i looked on SP for you and found Mathew with some siblings!! assume they are the same family and 1 has the mothers name:

22/12/1805 Mathew    father: Alexander   Abernathy
11/2/1810   Janet                          "                 "
8/5/1814     Robert                       "                  "
14/3/1824   Jean                           "                 "
18/6/1826  Andrew                       "                 "
8/11/1828   James                 Alexander & Margaret Duff     Abernathy

seems to be a big gap 1814 - 1824 so possible he was married twice?Huh??

Still on the hunt for Matthew's mother's name  Undecided

Diddy, I think this supports your suggestion of a possible second marriage for Alexander Speedie:

My Surname Duff is in my Grandmothers name:
Margaret Duff Speedie Born 1864 in Dunshalt, Fife,
Scotland.
I believe her parents to be James Speedie and Margaret
Suttie.

I believe James Speedie to be Alexander Speedie and
Margaret Duff They were married Dec.4, 1824

Good hunting monica. I've just had to go pick up my daughter from Derby station as her train was cancelled!!

I can't find any marriages / deaths on SP but didn't think of the wills.

Glad you managed to pick up your daughter Diddy  Smiley

Jury's is still out in my head whether Matthew's mother was or was not Margaret Duff  Undecided Conflicting info on-line. For example, daughter Marion who shows in 1841 at home with parents Alexander and Margaret (Duff). She was born c. 1816-18 and before the date of a possible marriage for Alexander and Margaret (Duff)  that showed on the other post (and that I cannot see on SP). From her death cert, Margaret Duff shows as mother:

Marion PETRIE (married to Robert PETRIE)
died 25th Sep 1889 11h0m PM at Dunshalt, Auchtermuchty aged 73 years
Father: Alexander SPEEDIE, Farmer, deceased
Mother: Margaret DUFF, deceased
Cause of death: Supposed Paralysis suddenly - no medical attendant
Informant: Robert PETRIE her widower (present)

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SCT-FIFE/2005-05/1117045022

Margaret Duff/Speedie looks to have died on 13 Aug 1872 in Kettle, Fifeshire. Parents given as Robert Duff and Barbara Scott www.bryan-martin.net/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I18593&tree=gam

The names Barbara and Margaret feature in Matthew and Isabel (Harrower) children's names.

A few more children showing potentially for Alexander (and Margaret Duff? but name not given):

From the list you showed Diddy:

22/12/1805 Mathew    father: Alexander   Abernathy
11/2/1810   Janet                          "                 "
8/5/1814     Robert                       "                  "
14/3/1824   Jean                           "                 "
18/6/1826  Andrew                       "                 "
8/11/1828   James

There is also showing in Abernathy OPRs:

BARBRA SPEEDIE Christening: 30 AUG 1807
MARGARET SPEEDIE Christening: 23 FEB 1812
ALEXANDER SPEEDIE  Christening: 13 JUL 1819

Missing the entry for Marion born c. 1816.

Roll Eyes Guessing game now with Scottish naming pattern and order:

Alexander - parents Matthew and Janet...maybe!
Margaret - Robert and Barbara...which fits with what we are seeing elsewhere
