Inquests in Wiltshire
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 09:43 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I have a death cert for an ancestor Hector Bull who died in 1869 at Biddestone, Wilts. This certificate mentions the coroner William B Whitmarsh who held an inquest for Hector on 18th Jan 1869. Does anyone know if the information from the inquest would be available and if so where could I find it?

Thanks,
Kim

Inquest records if they still exist are closed for 75 years after the event. Whilst this does not apply in your situation few coroners records survive. However, in that era, the inquest will have been very fully reported, with very graphic detail in the local press. So your best way forwards, find the papers circulating in the area at the time, and work forwards from the date of death; that way you should cover both the incident and the inquest reports.
