Benjamin BUTLER
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 12:06 UTC (UK) »

Hello, I'm looking for a Benjamin BUTLER who might have hailed from East Ilseley. He was married to Ann FARRAL ( a Flintshire lass I think ) in 1773 and lived in Flintshire with his 6 children. There are no couples living in the Hanmer area of Flintshire who produced Benjamin. His parents might have been William and Elizabeth BUTLER. Does anyone have this family in their tree and who might be able to shed some light on Benjamin please?
Thank you

Hi Alan,, THANk YOU so much, that reallly does help my sister & I !!  It's always difficult to track someone once they've left the county where the family have always been .... and we're relative novices at this so we are very grateful for your time and help.

Kind regards

Islaruth,

I'm not sure how far back you wish to go but there are many "Butler" families listed in the East Isley PRs

I have found these entries which I think are relevant;

South Moreton, Berks -
marriage on 24-7-1748  William Butler , Isley to  Elizabeth Stream, Moulsford, Berks,

East Isley, Berks -
baptism 30-6-1724 William Butler s/o William  & Elizabeth (?) Butler

Also in East Isley there is a marriage on 23-5-1717 of William Butler to Elizabeth Pinker, botp
no other details shown.

If you wish me to continue please let me know.

Hello Alan, wow, thank you so much for the additional information. May I ask, what might be, to you, a very basic question? We have spent hours at the Flintshire records office ( we live on the Wirral near Chester ) and have tracked our line back to Benjamin. But it seems apparent now that he came into Flintshire upon marrying Anne Farral. As there are no certificates available now to prove things, is it purely a detailed process of elimination? We have found 3 ( I think ) Benjamin Butlers in other counties but the other two just don't fit dates-wise whereas, the Berkshire gentleman does. How would you go about proving that this is OUR Benjamin & not just a wild goose chase? Am I right in thinking that your Berkshire Records Office is in Reading? A long way to travel if it's not him but necessary if it is !!
Thank you once again

Hi Islaruth,
Trying to prove if a certain person is a ancestor  is very difficult. As far as I'm concerned its just a case of trying to find the most likely individual,  given a things such as suggested baptism years, locations, witnesses if any, and any other detail that you may have collected along the way.
You say your Benjamin married  Ann Farral, did the records say where he came from? If he did then its a start to look into the records for that parish.
I, personally have had a few too many wild goose chases in my quest for ancestry records only to find I had chosen the wrong line to follow.
So to my thinking there is no proof whatsoever, unfortunately.

As far as I know the Berks Records Office is in Reading, whereas I note you live near Chester. I live a little further afield in South Australia.

I can't thank enough the people here on Rootschat for all the help I have received in recent times
because Its just impossible for me to visit the records offices.
I have received many openings here from rootschatters who have looked in their copies of various records or have even visited the R/O on my behalf.
I have a few CDs for some  Berks parishes  from  either  the Berks or Oxford Family History Societies which is how I came to provide the previous information.

If you would like me to look for additional family members then please let me know.

Alan

Hi Alan,
South Australia? My goodness, Chester is just up the road then compared to you! It must be incredibly hard to do research from such a distance. We visited Australia for a month in 2007 and I met a man who was trying to research his family in Scotland. So I'm making use of Ancestry to help him. I guess you're well past where Ancestry will help you? I'd happily help you in return!  No the marriage record didn't say where Benjamin came from so it's as I thought .... a detailed process of elimination!  I'll shout out if I think you might have some information for us, thank you for your kind offer. And good luck in your search!
Kind regards
