Charles Ebden and co
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 13:34 UTC (UK) »

Hallo,
we have this chap in the FT called Charles Ebden (1782-1868).  He says that he was born in Sutton although if research is correct he was in 'London' by 1813 because Charles Ebden married Sarah West at Stepney in that year and he was certainly in London in 1841 until his death.
We have certainly found out that his parents were Thomas Ebden and Ann Pledger but we don't know much else.   Huh
Any help would help...  Smiley
Thank you
Kirk
PS
Charles was a straw hat maker by trade but I have no idea about his family...
PPS
He 'may' have had a brother called Bryant Ebden.

Wow Hepburn - they were a busy couple!
But I see that there is Bryant Ebden in there which is a good sign.

Hi

Burials St Nicholas Sutton
23rd February 1817
Thomas Ebden aged 80

6th October 1811
Ann Ebden aged 74

13th August 1770
William Ebden

9th August 1774
James

23rd March 1777
Briant Ebden

8th September 1779
William Ebden

21st December 1779
Joseph Ebden

6th December 1791
Thomas Ebden aged 25

24th November 1804
John Ebden aged 42

There are a few other Ebden burials which might be John's children.

Mary married Thomas Stoakes in Sutton in 1779 and Ann married Thomas Rigbey in 1781.

Ann's age at burial would make this baptism for her very likely

ANN PLEDGER
Christening:  25 MAR 1739   Sutton
Father:  JOHN PLEDGER
Mother:  MARTHA

There is a lot to work with there.  I don't suppose it said what they all did for a living?

Hi

This website will give you images of standard parish registers for the period you are interested in so you can see what information is usually given in registers for each period

http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/registers/home.htm

Burials very rarely give occupation but I'm looking at an index not the registers themselves.

Valda
