Amos and Thomas Harper
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 14:52 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find out whether or not there is a connection between my GGG Grandfather, Thomas Harper, who was born in Leicestershire in 1801 (approx), and Amos Harper, who was born in Bedworth, Warwickshire in 1799 (approx.).  I wonder whether they could have been brothers.  Thomas married Sarah Smith at All Saints Church, Loughborough in 1826 and was living in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire in the 1841 census.  Unfortunately he died later that year so I have been unable to accurately find out where he was born, although according to the 1841 census, it was in the County of Leicestershire.  Amos Harper was living in Loughborough, Leicestershire in the 1841 census and he died in Loughborough in 1869.  Having looked through census records for Harpers from Bedworth, they do seem to have a connection with Leicestershire and the name ‘Amos’ was used by the Mountsorrel Harpers.  If anyone has any information which may help I would be grateful.

I assume thomas & Sarah married 1826 not 1926!!  if so i can check the marriage record inL'boro to see if there is further info given ie fathers names. L'boro library is closed until  16th Nov. will check then unless MIke picks up info before!

Sorry - yes it is 1826 - I checked through it twice too!  I did find the marriage record for Thomas and Sarah at Wigston Records Office (the actual date of the marriage was 25th December) but there were no details of fathers or clues from witnesses.  It did occur to me though that I didn't take note of whether they were both living in All Saints parish at the time of the marriage.  It is possible that Thomas wasn't living in Loughborough.

Do they have parish records for all the villages at Loughborough library?  If so are they readily available or do you have to arrange a time to see them or book a machine to view them?

Hi, yes they have all the local records, also a folder with details of records held in other localish (if thats a word!!) libraries.

the family history section is open at all times and has PRs / newspapers / books / transcribed records. there are fiche and film readers. one of the readers has a photocopier attached. you don't need to book one and I've never had trouble getting a machine. You could though book one in advance if you are coming a distance just to be sure.

upstairs there is a local history room full of all sorts of records - books / maps / newspapers / periodicals. this does have slightly more restricted times but open most of the time. there is also usually someone there from the local history group who knows about the various records.

Thanks so much for the information about Loughborough library.  It is actually easier for me to get there without a car than to Wigston but I didn't realise they had the parish records there.  I only get to Wigston three or four times a year so I always have so much to do when I get there.  I will have to visit Loughborough and just concentrate on trying to find a lead for my Harpers.

Thanks again.
