I am looking for info about Mary Roberts who married John Jones in I assume abt 1855 in Holywell area. They had a son Samuel in 1858 in Greenfield which is how I know his mothers name but she left the family I am led to believe when Samuel was about 8. I can't find any of them on the 1861 census anywhere. I have been able to trace Samuel and his father from 1871. John Jones later became Captain John Jones and was born abt 1830 in Holywell I think and died in 1904 and is buried in Mostyn. I can't give an exact age as he changes his age a bit on the census. Samuel went on to marry Jane Holland and they had loads of children and lived in Llanerch-y-mor. Any help would be really appreciated, I have been trying to trace these for over a year and they are driving me crackers!
Thanks for reading

Hello Sarah
Have you discounted this marriage from North Wales BMD?
JONES, John & ROBERTS, Mary A 1852 at Whitford St Mary & Beuno, Flintshire Record Office ref C25/1/E253?

Thanks Heywood Yes John is listed as a mariner on Samuels birth cert. I do think it odd that Samuel is listed on census as nephew and not grandson, it is either the wrong person (just my luck!) or a mistaken possibly due to the person taking the census being English and Maria being welsh? I happened to come across another Captain John Jones born at the same time and buried in Greenfield cemetery, and with the name John Jones being so common i am always a little cautious. I just wish i could find the family on the 1861, i have even emailed ancestry asking for their help but to no avail. My tree is on ancestry under my name Rah1980.
I hadn't seen that wedding Heather but will check it out thanks.

I have tried everything I could think of, I have been through the whole Holywell 1861 census and come up with nada It doesn't help that Sam was an only child, and his mother had gone by 1871. I can't find Samuels baptism either, i've looked in Holywell, Bagillt and Mostyn and come up with nothing, although I don't know how much that would help, I'm not even 100% that the 1871 with Maria is correct. I'm sure the 1861 census is missing pages as i have the address that Samuel was liing in when he was born but I can't find it, sorry I am probably repeating myself. It looks like Tair Coed, Greenfield, Holywell

Typical! Why couldn't Mary have waited until 1871 before she walked out! Or had more children, or a more unusual name like Tamara or something else no one else is called lol Suppose i'll have to try and find the wedding cert, i've checked Holywell and it isn't there. Do you know when marriages started in register offices?
Thanks for all your help so far

In 1881 Samuel and his father were both on a boat called the Jane Roberts, by 1891 Samuel was with his wife Jane and a few kids. In 1871 I actually have John twice, once on a boat moored in Mostyn and once with Samuel and Maria down the road in Greenfield, although technically either of them could be the one buried in Greenfield! Or they both could be mine, Perhaps Maria put him down not knowing he was down on the boat, i'm sure that happened.
About the register, I was asking although knowing me not very clearly when weddings in a registry office started as oppossed to church/chapel weddings, I heard they were popular for shotgun weddings but don't know if they were available then, and where would the records of them be?

It is not them in St Asaph as some kind soul had the marriage records and looked it up for me I haven't discounted Whitford, but it does make me wonder about the Mary Ann thing. It is sooo frustrating, it is preventing me from following both lines back Stupid missing 1861 census
All ideas welcome
