WHITE family Fall River/Windsor Junction area 1840s - 1850s
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 14:56 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for information on an Irish WHITE family in Fall River or Windsor Junction area of Halifax County in the 1840s or 1850s.

My great great grandmother was Joanna [Ann] WHITE born ca 1833 in Ireland. She married Thomas HOLLAND ca 1852- 1853 and they had the following children:
Mary 1854 [my great grandmother]
Martha 1857
Thomas 1860
Charles Francis 1863
Annie 1867
John Edward 1870.

On the 1871 census they are living in Fall River, in 1881 in Barney's River, Pictou County - Thomas is now a lumberman. I do not have the 1861 census.

I do not have a marriage record for Thomas & Joanna, so do not know her father's name.  I do not know when Joanna came to Canada or whether it was with family or on her own. Thomas's family were Protestants, but in 1871 & 1881 his & Joanna's family were listed as Roman Catholics, so I presume he converted in order to marry.

I have fairly good knowledge of the descendants of 4 of thee 6 children [Martha & Annie remain a mystery].

Does anyone have any knowledge of an Irish family called WHITE in the area  in the mid 1800s?

All help gratefully accepted. Many thanks., Josey

Both the 1881 and 1871 census show Thomas born in Nova Scotia of English descent and Ann born Nova Scotia of Irish descent.  Was Ann actually born in Ireland?

The 1861 census shows a Thomas Holland and family living in Halifax County but the only details are there were 2 males and 3 females in the household.

The 1851 census is again limited in detail.  They give the general geographical area of the household but no origins of birth.  All they have is the head of the household and the number of males and females under age categories and how many families were enumerated together.

There are a number of possibilities in Halifax County.
Sam'l White -Halifax Wards 1-5, Halifax County 1 family - 2 M 20-30, 5 F 20-30
Joseph White - Halifax County 1 family - 1 M under 10, 1 F under 10, 1 M 30-40, 1 F 30-40
Thos White - Shad Bay, Eastern H.W. Lide, plus Prospect Bay Halifax County - 2 families
3 M under 10, 2 F under 10, 3 M 10-20, 2 F 10-20, 1 M 20-30, 1 M 40-50, 1 F 40-50

The next 3 are all listed underneath each other in an area that includes the whole district of upper and lower Prospect Bay Halifax County
Sam'l White - 1 family - 1 F 30-40, 1 M 30-40, 1 M 40-50, 1 M over 50, 1 F over 50
Sam'l White Jr - 1 family, 2 M under 10, 1 F under 10, 4 F 10-20, 1 M 10-20, 1 M 20-30, 1 F 20-30
Patt White - 1 family - 1 M under 10, 1 F under 10, 1 M 10-20, 1 M 20-30, 1 F 20-30, 1 M 30-40, 1 F 30-40

There are at least 5 more in Halifax County that I will look at later.  Not very helpful in tracing people.

Thank you very much, that's a lot of information. I thought I had the reference to Joanna [Ann]  being born in Ireland somewhere but can't find it. It looks as though I have mistaken Irish descent for Irish born. Joanna would have been about 17 - 18 in 1851 so that may rule out some of the families like Joseph in Halifax Co & Patt in Prospect Bay.

I have looked on www.novascotiagenealogy.com but haven't found a marriage record or marriage bond. Is there anywhere else I can look? Do you know if there is an LDS film of RC marriages for that period?

Thanks again, Josey

I have this excerpt from the 1838 census index. The Truro Road entry looks the most likely [Thomas lived on a Land Grant off Truro Road] & this Michael White does have a female 0 - 6 as does James in Halifax City.

None of the children were named Michael or James as far as I know.

modified - whoops! Copyright - I had better transcribe that & remove the .jpg.

On the 1938 index there are 2 White families there with a female aged 0-6;
Michael labourer 0 0-6 M, 1 0-6 F, 4 6-14 F, 0 0-6 M, 0 14+ M, 1 14+ F total 7 is in Truro Road, so a possibility.
James labourer 0 0-6 M, 4 0-6 F, 2 6-14 M, 0 6-14 F, 1 14+ M, 1 14+ F total 9 is in Halifax City .
