Wesham Workhouse in 1911
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 16:33 UTC (UK) »

I have the "official" address for this - 1 Derby Road - but an address search on the 1911 census website doesn't find it, either as Road or Rd.  1 Derby Road in Blackpool and in Lytham both seem to be private houses.  Because of FMP's "fair usage" policy I really don't want to get too carried away clicking anything and everything.  Is anyone able to help me with the 1911 census ref for this institution?  One of my ancestors died in the workhouse infirmary a little after the census, I've not managed to find him yet and I'm wondering if he was a patient enumerated only by his initials.

Hi,

 Smiley

There is some information about Fylde Union Workhouse on this website:-

www.workhouses.org.uk

Any records that have survived (and unfortunately it says there are only a few) are held at Lancashire Records Office.

Hi
I live near Wesham Park Hospital as it came known as most of it has now dissapeared and a new housing estate built there a couple of years ago.
My great grandma and 2 of her children were in there in 1911.
They used to use 1 Derby Road  as the address so people wudnt know it was the work house.
It had alot of uses as a hospital for years.

Thank you everyone for your assistance, I've now established the 1911 census ref for this workhouse, the inmates were enumerated by their full names (not initials) and my ancestor's not there unless he was using a different name entirely (in which case I have no chance!).  I'm now trawling the various Blackpool enumeration districts in the hope of spotting a likely candidate.
