Hello, could anyone help me by looking up the birth of WILLIAM PENNERTON abt 1817. His birth and marriage surname is Pennerton, but by the 1841C it had changed to Penington. Thanks.

Thank you all so much. I haven't been able to find anything about Julia Cain other than she was born in Cork. I'm not aware of any Catholicism in the family, but could be interesting to find out. I'm slightly confused, dawnsh could you tell me if your info about his marriage has Williams surname spelt Pennerton as suffolk*sue has the same birth year as I have, but the different spelling. Thanks.

The parish clerk has written the surname as Pennerton for both William and his father as per your 1st post.
However, the bride, groom and witnesses all made there marks 'X' where a signature was required.
Interestingly, when their sons John and Joseph (both Pennington) married on the same day, 4th June 1876 at St James Shoreditch, most of the signatures were marks 'X', indicating a level of illiteracy within the family.

Hi
On the 1839 marriage William's father's occupation is given as labourer, which of course doesn't mean he wasn't a mariner twenty years earlier, or confirms that he was still alive in 1839.
1841 and William and Julia were in Limehouse where they are on censuses at least until 1861. This might be a possibility for William senior in the Stepney area, but a bit old for a father and a mariner in 1817.
1841 census HO107 714/8 folio 5 Ratcliff workhouse William Pennington 75 Labourer not born Middlesex
Perhaps significant he was buried in Limehouse.
Burial St Anne, Limehouse 27th May 1847 William Pennington 81 years Limehouse. Funeral service performed by the Curate of Stepney.

Many thanks, I am still digesting the info given which is interesting, but dawnsh you have set up another query for me to go into. You have JOSEPH [son of William & Julia] marrying in 1876. I have only found one child Joseph William b. 1880 for Joseph, but he was then about 37 [which was quite old for a first] He had married Jane Emma Kidman in 1878, but I then found him married to Mary on the 1871C. It now looks as though he was married three times; to Mary from sometime before 1871 until before 1876. then to ?? from 1876 [the marriage you found] to sometime before 1878 and then Jane Emma 1878. Thanks again.

Hi
St Peter Stepney 2nd December 1878 Joseph Pennington Full Age Bachelor Sewerman St Peter Stepney William Pennington Sewerman Jane Emma Kidman Spinter St Peter Stepney Henry Kidman Matmaker Marriage by banns both signed by making their marks Witnesses J Strutt and Emma Conell?
1881 census RG11 465 folio 115 46 Maroon Street Limehouse Joseph L. Pennington 35 Head Married Sewer Lab (Drainage serv) Limehouse Middlesex Jane Pennington 27 Wife Married Ratcliff Middlesex Joseph L. Pennington Son 5 months Limehouse Middlesex
1871 census RG10 487 folio ? 8 Darling Row Bethnal Green Joseph Pennington 28 Head Married Sewerman Limehouse Middlesex Mary Pennington 25 Wife Married Bethnal Green William Pennington 60 Father Widower Labourer Limehouse Middlesex
There doesn't seem to be a marriage for Joseph and Mary so they may have just been living together as man and wife and then went their separate ways.

Once again, many thanks for finding that info for me. I did know that the 1881C have Joseph L. for father & son, but all other census just have the son [b. 1880] having William as a middle name. Thanks again.
