John Burton married 1775 Spalding
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 18:59 UTC (UK) »

John married Mary Cowham at Spalding 23 May 1775. Does anyone know who their parents were and where they were both born please?A quick re reading of the IGI suggests the marriage took place at Gosberton, not Spalding, and that Mary may have originated at Algarkirk.

My Lincs marriage index says it was at Spalding.

But don't forget FreeREG http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=939974

Thanks for that Geoff, but reading the IGI entry again strongly suggested that though she was OF Spalding the actual marriage took place at Gosberton. About to check the addresses you sent in your posting.

I see what you mean there is a conflict or contradiction between the IGI and Free BMD. If he was of Gosberton that is helpful, as during the 19th century the family lived at Pinchbeck.

Both of the IGI entries are submitted - not extracted from registers.  The FreeREG entry will have been transcribed from some "original source" (probably BTs as there are no witness names) ... although the IGI batch has two marriages in May 1775, it doesn't have the one you are interested in Huh

Geoff, Thanks, looks as though the marriage was at Spalding, Since my family were based at Pinchbeck during the 19th century, with Spalding being to the south and Gosberton to the north, I think this looks extremely likely.

Phillimore CD of Lincs marriages  - the marriage definitely took place at Spalding Parish Church.    John BURTON of Gosberton and Mary COWHAM.

BURTON is still quite a common name in Gosberton and COWHAM is common in and around Boston according to my (very) local knowledge!

Thanks Nottschick for that. My Burton's lived in Pinchbeck during the 19th century, and there were a lot of them in the general area and into Cambs and Northants. I suspect they descended from the Burton family landed gentry of Surfleet who lost their lands etc. after the civil war for backing parliament. One thing that I do find strange however, I was brought up in Boston and lived my first 25 years there. I cannot recall ever hearing or seeing the name Cowham until I found it in connection with this wedding which I believe is that of a set of my 3X great grandparents. Thanks for your input.

I'll send you a PM about the wealthy Burton families (now deceased) of Pinchbeck.
