Where are the local registers now?
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 20:45 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I would like to have several marriage entries checked at various registry offices, but can anyone tell me where to post these to?

They are,

Wharfedale
Hemsworth
Rother Valley
Staincross
Ewecross

I am totally confused, I think it was on the Genuki website where it explains the registry office closures, & says the registers are divided amongst 3 or 4 named districts, but how do you know exactly which one?

If anyone can help, then many thanks.

Are we talking post 1837 marriages here?     Depending on dates if you search on www.freebmd.org.uk you will be given a GRO reference for each one and that will show which office they were registered in.  You can order direct from the GRO too then you needn't worry where to write to.   If they don't show on the free index then you have to search the full one which is on various paying sites.
Genuki does show which office covered which towns.
You cannot check details without buying a certificate unless you know the church and can look at the parish register.

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for you reply!

The marriages are post 1837, & I have hit a brick wall really. I don`t know for sure who the person married, so I was hoping perhaps a residential address, or fathers name may find the correct entry.

I guess it`s back to the drawing board then.

Thanks again.

Is this within census time?   One way is to look for a couple in the next census and see if x turns up married to y or z.   Easier if the names are not too common though.

Wharfedale registers are now split between Leeds, Bradford & North Yorkshire

Do you know which sub-district you are looking for?

all of the Wharfedale registers in an area now covered by Leeds council will have ther egisters in Leeds.
e,g, Otley, Pool etc.
Ilkley will have registers in bradford
the areas which are now part of North yorkshire should have the registers in Harrogate.

Some of these districts appear to be in areas covered by YorkshireBMD - it is incomplete, but marriages will give the names of both parties and a location if at C of E church.

Registers for at least some parishes in the Hemsworth area are at Pontefract.
