Correlation between Volume number and area? .... Completed
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 23:54 UTC (UK) »

I vaguely remember a topic on the correlation between different areas and the Volume number on the Civil Registers of BMD’s. Unfortunately I can’t find it now.

Using the details from the LDS pilot site I have successfully ordered a number of certs from Roscommon and so far all have been correct except one. Most of the certs I have ordered have been from Dublin North and Balrothery districts.

Births for Dublin North (Howth, Baldoyle, Kinsealy, Balgriffin, etc) have all been Vol 2.

For Balrothery, the Vol number is always 2, 7 or 17.

The same holds true for Marriages and Deaths except for one death in Balrothery which is Vol 12.

The only ‘wrong’ one I got so far was Dublin North, Vol 12 and it was for an address in Great Britain St.

If someone can explain how this works it would be very helpful when I reach a point where there are maybe 3 possible certs that match closely to what I know.

Can the Volume number be used to eliminate some of the possibilities?

Dara.

there's some notes here : http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/districts.htm
and here : http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/RegDistricts.htm

Connor's notes dont correlate with some of the Balrothery volume references you mention..  I think the volumes covered on the list may be the earlier ones.

Thank you Shane. I think I have it now.

All of the Dublin districts are V2.

Prior to 1877 V2, V7, V12 and V17 indicate which quarter the event took place in.

That ties in exactly with the certs I checked so far but unfortunately does not help identify the area in Dublin.
