Hello all.  Firstly a big "thank you" to those of you who have helped me so much during my family research ('Mike from Leicester' in particular).  I visited Leicester on a research trip with my father a few weeks ago (from Ireland) and I have now nearly completed the family tree in time for distribution at Christmas.

When we were there we discovered the location of the hosiery business that my great-grandfather established and I would love to find an old photograph or two that showed the area around the time he was in business - can anyone help?

Specifically, his business ("Markham Brothers") operated from 1915 to 1923/4 in a building on the very corner of Western Road  & Braunstone Gate that is still standing today.  They then moved up the Western Road to the junction with Briton Street from 1923/4 up until 1934 when they went out of business. 

Would anyone out there have any old photos of these buildings or the nearby area - or know where I could find one?  The building on Western Road / Briton St appears to have remained vacant for many years after the Markhams left it, so perhaps someone might even have a photo from the 1940s of the spot?

As always, any help would be very much appreciated as I move to finish off my research (at last!).

The Leic RO has a display at the moment of pictures of various slums in various parts of the city, and a book to go with the display.

It might be worth while ringing them to find out if it covers that area (I think it does) - you could then buy a book (they will post it out to you) and even if it doesn't contain any pictures of the actual building, you will have a pictorial record of the area.

Thanks for the tip Annie.  I actually caught the exhibition when I visited the LRO two weeks ago but, alas, there is no relevant pic I could see in it.  Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a shot in the LRO's photographic holdings either.  Help still needed!

Hi there.  Yes, and I was directed to a single reference number set (in the red files) that had photos indexed by street name - but there were none at all for Western Road.  I hope there weren't more sets that I missed...

I think the Leicester mercury newspaper may have a 'looking back' section . maybe posting a request there may help?

Thanks for the idea Diddy - although there doesn't appear to be an online forum, I have emailed the paper's picture sales department directly so we'll see if that leads anywhere...
