Joseph Matthews RAF WW2
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 10:50 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I've never posted on this site before but was hoping that someone might be able to help me find out more about Joseph Matthews who served in the RAF in WW2. I don't know his service number but have the following information:

He was born in Bishop Auckland in 1921 and joined the RAF (possibly as a boy entrant) in the 1930's.

He was a rear gunner and lost an eye and a kidney in action. I believe he may have been posted to the Leicestershire/Lincolnshire/Rutland area as he settled in Oakham after the war.
He married Muriel A Parker in Oakham 1946 and in 1976 remarried to Jean E Stafford/Elliott.

I'd really like to find out what he did during the war or contact any family members.

Any help or ideas would be very gratefully received.

Thank you

Hi

Please try the following:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html
You can obtain his military records off them and then once you have found which Sqn he was on there are lots of sites for Assns for particular sqns so you can meet people who were his colleagues or relatives of....
You might also go to the London Gazette to see if he is mentioned in there as that sometimes quotes the squadron especially if he won medals.  Talking of which when you get his records if he has been awarded medals and dont have them you may then be able to claim them....
Good luck
Dee
