Parish church Preston
« on: Sunday 01 November 09 12:21 UTC (UK) »

I have four marriage certs from 1849 - 1863, all from Parish church Preston.  Any ideas how I can find which church (or churches) these are from?  I can read the curates name on the certs, if this is any help.  I am trying to find the father and mother of Thomas Lingard (1836 Kirkham) and wondered if searching grave yards would help, or would a trip to Preston records office sort out this mystery?

Hi,

Have a look at this website:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

It will certainly tell you the churches in both Kirkham and Preston.  Just had a quick look as I have to go out shortly and can't see any baptism  records.  There are a a few Lingard burials in Kirkham but all after 1850 though.

Hope it helps.

Hi,

Usually if the religion of the family is known and you have addresses from certs, you can narrow it down to the area, which then you can narrow down the churches in that area.

If you know for certain the area, I would say search the parish church registers for the Baptism of Thomas Lingard.  Most times I have found there has been only one Church for the religion in an area, so narrows it down alot.

If go to Manchester Central library website and click church registers in archives and local history it lists some of the Churches for Preston and some records are on line to search.  I see nine churches with baptisms available for the date your searching.  So they are available for searching.

Also try Lancashire opc site, there is a Thomas Lingard bapt 23 September 1838 St Elphin Warrington. Parents George and Ann Abode Orford St Occu- bricklayer

Possability Huh
Hope this helps

I am afraid I do not know the religion. I will try the Manchester link, I do have addresses from the certs, so will try that aswell.  Many thanks.

The parish church of Preston is St. John's C. of E.

There are some records from that church on the lancs opc site but some chunks are missing but there are some Lingard baptisms in the 1840's. Unfortunately, the marriages only go up to 1635.   It would be worth a trawl through though.

Have you seen the IGI?  There are a couple of Thomas Lingards on there.  What proof do you have for the date 1836?

Hope this helps a little. R.

I have 3 marriage certs for him, they do differ by a few years.  I have found him on the census with the 3 different wives.  His father is John ( a rush manufacturer) but is deceased on all certs.  I have no idea of the mother either! St. John's seems a good place to go searching for graves.  Many thanks

The burial records for St John's (Preston Parish Church), and St Michael's, Kirkham are at Lancashire records office in Preston.  I think the stones in the churchyard of St John's have been taken up, and even in the 1960s they were being used as paving stones around the church - so you may not find them.  (Google Earth shows mostly grass around the church - it's on Church Street).

People from Kirkham quite often married at St John's, but unless they lived in Preston, they are more likely to be buried at St Michael's in Kirkham.

Added. If Thomas' family was CofE, he was almost certainly baptised at Kirkham, St Michael's, so a trip to  Lancashire Records Office should reveal who his parents were.

Do you have to order records at Preston or can I just walk in and ask?  It is quite a way to go, but obvioulsy worth it if I can find out.  I hope to make the journey after Christmas.  Would you know if there are still grave stones at St Michael's.  Many thanks for your help.

This page tells you all you need to know about visiting the records office:

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/record_office/planning/

You don't need to book.  The parish records are on microfiche or microfilm, and there are plenty of viewers for you to use to look at them.  The staff are very helpful and will show you where to find things.

Don't forget to take two items for proof of your signature and address.

There are still graves at St Michael's, although some are overgrown.  As well as the burial register, the records office also has a list of burials taken from the gravestones (I think it was done during the 1970s when more of them were visible).  There is another copy of this list kept at the vicarage of St Michael's.
